The famous Gaius Julius Caesar of the Roman Republic, later the Roman Empire has had many a story circulate around his doings over the centuries, but one in particular stands out as being so uproarious as to beggar belief. Around 75 BC, the young Caesar was on a ship that was taken by Cilician (not Sicilian) pirates, but he was not impressed by the seafaring robbers. While the other passengers cowered before them, Caesar simply sat and read as they took over the ship. On recognizing the potential value of their hostage the pirates announced that they intended to demand a ransom of 20 silver talents for his release. At this Caesar had the unmitigated gall to laugh at his captors, offended that they didn't raise the ransom amount to one more befitting a man of his stature. For the remainder of his time as a pirate's prisoner, he would berate, threaten and harass them, but despite all of this there is no record of the pirates having done Caesar any harm. The pirates sent
