"You're sure it's alright, you taking the morning shift?" his mother asked that morning.
"It's alright," his father replied. "Besides, Chitamba and Mariti were up late last night. It's not often that happens. We can let them sleep in a little."
They exchanged a strange little smile. Dharoo didn't like that smile, because it didn't make any sense.
"Chilaganu can go with you, then," his mother went on, but Dharoo interjected.
"No! I go with Baba! That's how it goes."
Dharoo was thirteen, only a couple of years old enough to have an adult name. And there was still too much he didn't understand, but some things stayed the same. One of them was that he went to the field with Baba. Not Chilaganu.
His father had raised an eyebrow at him, and he blushed. "Sorry, Mama, Baba."
