Hogwarts, Eighth Year. Harry Potter must choose: talk about a secret or keep it. Place trust in one teacher or keep silent. Speak up in support of a war hero or let the weight of public opinion take its toll. Will Harry's reflection in the Mirror of Erised offer guidance? Mirror is a choice and consequence game with ~12,000 words of dialogue. What's next, treacle tart or flying? Was it really Snape that Harry saw in the Mirror of Erised? Will Harriet tell the Headmistress all about her crush on Ginny Weasley? Will Harry ever feel as free on the ground as he does in the sky with Ron? Will Severus Snape keep his job? It's up to you.

Thank you to my beta-reader, Antuhsa, for playing all the storylines and not getting tired of seeing the same Snape with his hair over his face and the same outraged Harry expression over and over.

Mirror was made over the Spring and Summer of 2018, to answer a question, how would Harry Potter's story unfold differently if it had been about Harriet Potter? It then became a personal study of sex and gender, and various closets we hide in. It has a Snape/Harry or Snape/Harriet and a Ginny/Harry or Ginny/Harriet endings. You can also play a pairing-free variant. Drawing and writing for this game made me smile many times. If you choose to play it, I hope it does the same for you.

Please comment below if you run into any issues or have any questions  (or if you are unable to download and want me to send you the install file.) Scroll down for the walk-through.

So, how do I play this thing?

Download the thing. Extract the thing. Open the resulting directory and double-click on the 'Mirror' within.

Make sure your sound works. You only need to install Ren'Py if you want to make your own game, you don't need to install it to play one. If you can't get it running, reach out, I can help.

Mac users, control+click the file, and then click open to bypass 'unknown developer' message.

How much time will I need to get to the end?

A little less than thirty minutes, perhaps? Quicker if you're replaying various storylines to get the achievements.

Is this a dating sim?

No. It also contains no nudity and you cannot die. You have to read a lot of dialogue lines and make some (hopefully meaningful) choices.

What is your favorite storyline?

"Two Steps Up" and "Free to Fly". They were written first and I used them as a base to write others. They also have slightly more dialogue content than the rest.

That said, am also fond of "When Ginny Met Harriet" Harry, she is pretty amazing.

What came first, the art or the text?

Both. I drew when I was procrastinating on writing the script, and vice versa.

Will you make another game?

Not sure. This has been pretty labor-intensive. All my video-game playing time for about half of a year went into making one. Perhaps?

Are there mobile versions?

I can make them, let me know what you need.

So, how do I get to date Snape?

Annoy him the least during your conversations with him: don't lie, provide meaningful answers. Grow fond of his eyes or his hands. Defend him in front of the Headmistress. Finish the game.

So, how do I get to date Ginny?

Choose seeing her over the treacle tart or a chance to go flying.

Hey, is this a bug?

Yes, probably. Let me know what's wrong in the comments and I'll release a new version with a fix.

Keep scrolling for the walk-through.

Spoilers ahead.

Mirror 1.0 Walkthrough

This is a story of closets and coming out of one. After the war, Snape is about to be sacked, then Harry steps in, forcing Snape to have a tough conversation with his student.

Main choices
- Harry Potter vs Harriet 'Harry' Potter in the introduction dictate main character graphics (with short or long hair) for the majority of the play-through.
- Harry seeing the reflection of the opposite sex they're presenting as in the Mirror of Erised will start transgender Harry story lines.
- Harry choosing to see Ginny in the evening will assume Harry is interested in Ginny.
- Harry's interest in Snape is decided by Snape's approval points, awarded throughout the dialogue. (ie: Don't lie to Snape when Harry's heading back to the dorms for extra approval points.)

There are six basic storylines you can play through, each with its own underlying theme to explore.
- "Free to fly" storyline (FTM Harry, with either love interest.)
- "Two Steps Up" storyline (MTF Harry, with either love interest.)
- "Fellow Soldiers" storyline. (Cis Harry interested in Ginny.)
- "When Ginny Met Harriet" storyline. (Cis Harriet interested in Ginny.)
- "Thinking of Severus" storyline. (Cis Harry interested in Snape.)
- "Turn to page 486" storyline. (Cis Harriet interested in Snape.)

Approval Points

Snape and McGonagall both accumulate approval points throughout Harry's dialogue choices.
- McGonagall's approval dictates whether Snape is let go or stays on as a teacher.
- Snape's approval dictates whether he stays in touch with Harry after the school year, thus triggering additional encounter (date) scenes.

Nose of a Gargoyle - saw Snape in the mirror of Erised

Hello, Hedwig - saw Hedwig's feathers in the mirror of Erised

Turn to Page 486 - Harriet brewed a potion under Snape's instruction

Two Steps Up - took two steps up the staircase up to the girls' dormitory

- Free to Fly - reminisced about the freedom to fly, among other freedoms

- When Ginny met Harriet - completed relevant storyline while interested in Ginny

Thinking of Severus - completed relevant storyline while interested in Severus

Sweet Tooth - really liked the treacle tart

- We Don't Need No Education - gave the worst possible answers to the teachers all the way throughout the game

- Fellow Soldiers - sought help from Snape while haunted by wartime memories

Harriet - mentioned 'Harriet' in the conversation with Snape

Harold - mentioned 'Harold' in the conversation with Snape

- The Potions Master - Snape kept his job

- The Potions Brewer - Snape had to find a new profession

The Stranger - Harry never saw Snape again

Legilimens and Chill - spent an evening with Snape at the end of the game

100 Percent - completed all possible achievements

There it is. Completed a 100%. Could you tell what are the names of the musics you used? It's very relaxing...

Best reference would be opengameart.org/content/epic-f… and opengameart.org/content/cc0-mu… - I chose a lot of music tracks that are open source and I didn't have to ask permission to use at the time. Hope this helps!

I haven't completed all the achievements. Actually, I care more about the Snape rescue stories ^^' ah ah, my bad. Too much fangirl-ing. It's very, very beautiful. The logo, after completing the story, is very... wow. I like the symbolic side of the Mirror logo and the main image a lot.

At first this Harry style of yours was a bit strange, but I got used to it and I love it. Snape's face is really the style I would've wanted to find. You managed the "dark, tunnel-like eyes", the greasy long hair, the thin non-manga-like face of his, his slightly yellowish complexion (like he was sick), and I love, absolutely love his faces! When he's wondering at something Harry says, when he makes the o-face, when he's got that sly smirk and glowing eyes (for example, when he says "I...see" when Harry tells him he's not into girls), the thin smile, side-looking eyes face then, and the happy faces, like the one when he's meeting Harry over a fireplace. Or even at the end image, when he's taking Harry's arm, in front of a bookshelf...

Your story does make sense. People want vengeance and of course Snape isn't going to do well, at least without some stubborn Golden Gryffindor to help him even if he's resigned to lose his job and reputation. I can't bring myself to do the Stranger ending though. I care too much.

The drawings are awesome. Ron, Hermione, McGonagall (I love her eyes too)... And the places. I really, really love them. Makes me remember why Hogwarts can be considered home. The dialogues are good too. The story... wow. You put the context of war very well. I like the fact that one ending takes no more than 15-30 minutes to get. Short and to the point.

I will likely search how to get the Free to Fly and Ginny ending, though I'd like to save Snape during them. I also did the Henriett story. I like it very much! The idea of cis (or trans?) Harry as well as a Henriett that doesn't want to end up as a housewife is so good! The choice to see Hedwige in the mirror breaks my heart a tiny bit... Really, it's a fan game I shall never forget. Really the kind of fan game I'd like. I played HP3 on PC, HP1 and 2 on a GameBoy Color, but your fan-game? I clearly can love it as much as HP3, if not more. Thank you for spending so much time into this.

Can you believe... the music. The music... makes me cry :') it's really, really beautiful. Sad too. And joyful at the end if we help Snape, you know, when we're reading his letter with a beautiful sky, clouds, with one resembling Hedwige carrying a letter. It's not often musics make me cry. I think I listened to them too long. The fireplace, the room with potions on a shelf, the corridor and the place with the Mirror of Erised are my favorite place. Oh, and let's not forget the ending fireplace, the bookshelf place in the end, and, as I already said, the sky. Perfect

I hope I conveyed all the gratitude and the loving of your game in this message. Really. You deserve something great for it. Thank you a lot because it feels like a present.

Have a great day :D

Hi there! I don't log into this account often and just saw this. Thank you. Wow, this is the kind of reply every creator wants to receive at some point in time. I'm writing a fanfic in the universe similar to this game and this is a boost of energy and creativity for the new draft. Thank you! I've collected the open-source soundtracks for Mirror and don't have a good reference, but let me see if I can find the origins.

Okay, first things first.
I L O V E this game! Saved in my favfolder!!Owl My Life
The Artwork is really nice and the storylines are awesome. Actually have to work tomorrow (or rather today), but stayed up for the ending.

(please note, that I try to criticise for you to improve and not because I like to annoy people or try to be mean. The game is (as stated above) great as it is. Just saying, if you want to hear the things I noticed)
What I noticed is a difference in the haircolour of some charakters (mainly Harry/Harriet) It's sometimes to light. The expressions don't always fit, but thats my perfecionism speaking there....^^;

I noticed no bug so far.

What I loved about this game: You can choose to be the male or female Harryform.
You could either choose between two loves (one male/one female) and I think you got the queerpart covered really well
I laughed my ass off at some parts XD
The story is short, but well written and cute and it's not one of those endless things, where you get bored after some time and never played till the end
The sound is nice and the melody not that annoying (I usually can't stand always repeating trallala)

I had to squeal at the end +|F2U|+ Parakeet Avatar

Aww! Thank you so much for the high praise! So glad to know you like it.

Also, additionally, thank you for the concrit, perfect format and I'll take note of it for the future or as I tweak version 1.1.

 - Yep, I've been overusing the 'oh' ( : o ) expression of Harry's all the way throughout as a shortcut and it sort of became a default 'some strong emotion' face for him / her as I wanted to keep the file size of install file down and also drew less expressions under time constraint. I may add a few more faces later on. (For most of the production time, Ron and Hermione only had one expression, I managed to release with each of them having two, which I count as an achievement.)
 - Do you have any suggestions on expressions not seen or covered so far (I'm willing to draw a couple more Harry faces to fill in the gaps) or alternatively, can you point out which ones are 'off'? IE: Let me know which dialogue points stood out as mismatched, if you remember.
 - I've tested this on one computer, mainly, and my laptop screen is ridiculously bright. I'll need to replay it on a different computer with the screen brightness turned down. Do you remember which backgrounds were used when Harry's hair seemed too light? (I'm betting it's the dungeons one with the potions cabinet? Or is it a certain expression that brightens the hair?)

I'm doing my best to cover the queer story plots to make up for the lack of them in canon! :-D This is what fanworks are for.

I must've spent a week searching for the good free soundtracks, as I have absolutely no talent in music-related fields, but am happy it worked out.

Thank you so much for this amazing piece of wonderful feedback!

I played again today to see, where the hair was off. Its the haircolour, when Harry is happy. There are more highlights in there, than in the others, but really it's no big thing ^^
It's amazing, what you've done and I don't even know how to draw a horse. XD
6urn's avatar
Thank you for noticing! And for playing. Seriously, thank you.

I wish I could show you what the initial versions of Harry expressions looked like before their final iteration just to demonstrate every art deserves a chance to shine. Keep drawing! (Horses optional.)
