Tutorial: How to draw anything by 5019 Tutorial: How to draw anything by 5019
Shrimp image from wikipedia article on pink shrimps!
You can see this as a photoset in my tumblr, prrb. [link]
The results are amazing, go take a look! [link]
If you are using this method I AM PROUD OF YOU my children
You can post your results in the "shrimp method" tag on tumblr - I track it! I do not really recommend posting them as a comment here as I will probably get flooded at some time, just like my other tutorial,,,,
But if you do, I will look at it, even if I do not say anything!

-
As one of my professor says, art is like some mystical teachnique that can not be teached, but can be learnt. And oh god, how right he is!
Many tutorials try to teach THEIR interpretation on something. For example, a hands tutorial show you drawn hands, and not photos. This way, they are trying to teach you an interpretation instead of teaching you how to have your own!
With this tutorial I will try to show you how to find your own interpretation. I am not teaching you how to draw. I am teaching you how to learn how to draw!

Know what happens when an artist only use other artist's interpretations as reference? This happens. [link]
If you can not see what is wrong then dear lord go pratice

Another thing! Art is like a muscle, and it is all about pratice. The more you pratice, the better you get! The more you whine at not being good, the more fucking nothing changes!

I hope my tutorial helps you all. Have a good day! īv`

I'm not 5019 but I can tell you what to do if you can't trace directly on the photo in a drawing program:

(1) Print out the reference photo and use tracing paper to trace it

OR

(2) use a grid! Put a grid over the reference photo. Draw a grid on your paper. Then just look at each square in the grid and draw that in the corresponding grid on your paper: it breaks the image down into smaller pieces that are easier to draw. You can also use this method to enlarge a piece. If you need more info than that, just Google for "drawing with a grid" and look at the various YouTube and other tutorials that pop up. This method takes longer for you to get it right but in my opinion it teaches you more quickly than straight tracing if you're actively thinking about proportions and how each square relates to the squares surrounding it. This is one of the traditional ways the Old Masters worked. :)

Would you say this could be applied to geometric art i e non-representational art like Sacred geometry, Mandalas or knotwork like say.. Viking knotwork? (Im at my wits end and desperate)

sure thing! for mandalas though, it might be worth taking a look at a mandala tutorial. they have some spots-to-shapes way to make them that will make them a way easier than a visual copy. but you can use finished one to pratice the dot-to-dot process.

Guess I've been doing it right so far, but thank you for making my life better anyway :happycry:

I just want to say that I was so scared this wasn't going to work for me, because things like this usually don't. I decided to try it with a Mamitera (owned by :iconponacho:) because why not. I am currently at the beginning of step 5, and in the course of around an hour I went from a mamitera that looks like a weird mutated duck to a pretty good mamitera, I just want to thank you! This is so effective and amazing and awesome!! Everyone who is considering doing this, do it for sure! It works really well!

I'm kind of curious as to what you are using as reference
Mamis bodies are inspired by bears and ferrets mostly then random other bits and pieces XD

Oh! Well, I literally used drawings of Mamis, because I figured that would be the easiest way to learn to draw one xD I followed the instructions (tracing, but I didn't save those, drawing one in a different pose, etc) but the drawing I created is kind of out of proportion and sketchy ^^;

Oh ok then
cause I draw them in my style and each other person draws them in their style
they can be drawn in any style as long as the basic features are there
they don't have to look how I draw them XD

That first shrimp is adorable.

Heck, They're all adorable  la in love

I shall put this in practice and make an army of shrimp-looking shrimps!

(I never did put much thought that using a tutorial from a drawn image is really less helpful than a tutorial that uses real examples. Well, this explains about a way where you can help yourself, make your own interpretation based in the real thing. Guess I'm mentally lazy. :>
Lets see how much my wolves will change :3)

I'm surprised. In a good way. I thought this would be joke, like have the shrimp in step one and then just redraw it into the majestic shrimp. Nope. A lot better than that, despite the laughs I'd get, this may come in handy with me and my problems and reptiles.
