Argh DA and their stupid pre-loading script! Try as I might the deviation full size would NOT show up - only an ugly little gray bar!

So I had to delete the entire deviation and try again! Grrrrrrrr!

Anyway I haven't done one of these in a while, but this is one of my entries for the Foundation 3D Resource Appreciation monthly contest. The Kelvin is modeled by Tobias Richter, Cinema 4D conversion and lighting by me.

I've been trying to convert this from Maya, but I'm running into bad smoothing issues... any suggestions?

What are you trying to convert it to?  What platform are you wanting to use it in?  I don't use Maya, so I can't help with that end of it...  More than likely though you are seeing some sort of "phong" issue.  You see that a lot in some conversions.  This same model is available already converted (where I got it from) to .lwo (Lightwave) which can be opened directly into Cinema 4D.

Max format.

If it's on Foundation3D, I've been banned from there, back from my arrogant days. lol

Ahhh I see.  Yeah I used Max a long  time ago.  I switched many years ago to Cinema 4D after Autocrashdesk bought them out.

Just thought I'd let you know this ship type now has a name. The book "Federation: The First 150 Years" just came out. It is sort of a history text on the Prime Reality, but this ship class is supposed to have existed in the Prime Continuity too as its design and "look and feel" (i.e. uniforms, props, etc.) predated the events of the movie. The book refers to the Kelvin's type as the "Einstein Class Starship." Her model kit describes her as a "deep space scout."

personaly i thinked the kelvin kicked more ass than the enterprise in the new movie

Same here. Oh, I like the new Enterprise and all, but my favorite ship from the whole movie was the Kelvin!

When I first saw the Kelvin I simply fell in love with the design. Love that ship, and yes it did kick ass even though it lost.

There is something about 'her' that grabs you, isn't there? Nice picture, by the way.

I wish my Hot Wheels model of the Kelvin was darker..... in the movie and screenshots and such, she always looked grey, and this thing is mostly WHITE.

Yeah I've seen those, nice little models but the paint job is all wrong lol ;)

I still like it. -pets his model of the Kelvin- >_> No I'm not weird!

wonder what the fate of this ship was in the prime timeline, and dont say it didnt exist, cause the alternate reality started when the kelvin came across the black hole.

Yeah that's part of the thing I think most people seem to forget: Of the 4 'main' ships (Enterprise, Narada, Jellyfish, Kelvin), only the Enterprise isn't of the prime universe, originally.

*sigh* She probably ended up being scrapped, getting too old and too obsolete.... better she went out in a blaze of glory.

Who knows, lol since it was never mentioned that I recall, and I've been watching the series since it was brand new each week on the TV ;)

one day we might, cause i know their still loyal to the prime reality (since they update star trek online, which takes place 26 years after nemesis)

Funny thing is, she ended up being my favorite ship from the movie, even over the Enterprise or the Narada. :O

In fact, I think my favorite sequence in the movie is the Kelvin's first appearance through to her destruction..... either that or when the Enterprise first arrives at Vulcan and has to dodge around all that debris.
2753Productions's avatar
Yep, that and the sequence where the Enterprise rises through the dust ;)
DrLoveless13's avatar
No.... that's later in the film.
