Kanohi Komau by 0nuku Kanohi Komau by 0nuku
The Komau has always been one of my favorite mask designs and I wish Lego gave us at least one recolor as they did for the Ruru. But then Shapeways had a sale a few weeks back so I ended up throwing this model together to 3D print a bunch of them, somehow believing that to be easier than painting them. :P I'm not sure if I'm going to make this model publicly available yet for copyright reasons.

To see what I did with this model (and the other ones I've been working on), you can check out my Flickr.

Well, I guess I'll think about uploading it.

I already seen you flickr photos and I think it's a good idea to propose some original masks with other colors.

I doubt copyright will be much of an issue, mainly because I've seen multiple items that are just pre-existing pieces.

Awesome work here! I noticed on flickr that you printed out a version of this in green, and had a bit of a discussion about how it's closer to sand green to anything, how close would you say it is? I've been trying to figure out a way to get a sand-green mask with minimal effort, but still have it look good.

I say the Lego color it is closest to is sand green, but "closest" is used loosely here. It's really sitting on some strange boundary between bright green and sand green. And the strange thing is that every other Shapeways print I've seen in green is more of a dark green color. They must have been running out of dye or something.

So yeah, if you're looking for sand green, this probably isn't the best way to do it. Painting would probably be more successful, even if you 3D printed masks to be painted.

I think Lego probably doesn't care if they let someone like ModaltMasks run a business with painted Kanohi. Besides, the mask only came with Onewa and Velika...

The difference is that painted Kanohi were still originally produced by Lego, while with this model, its me and Shapeways who are making the money off Lego's designs. I just tend to err on the side of caution.

Ask them if you're unsure. 3D-printed masks are getting pretty popular, and you're not the first to utilize shapeways for it.
