The Wanderer by 0laffson The Wanderer by 0laffson
The warrior kept walking in the endless maze of rocks and sand, the soft sound of his feet on the dust was the only thing breaking the deafening silence. He stopped for a few minutes, catching his breath, and looked back at the sun, barely visible through the clouds. Its light was pale, weak, it felt like the sun was about to leave him alone to his fate, like all the other gods of his people.
As a warrior he should have died fighting to protect his kingdom, but what difference would have that made? His king was dead, just like his comrades and family, his city was a pile of ash and the kingdom was in ruin. Nothing he did could have changed that, and he didn't want to die, not yet at least. After wandering in the desert for almost a year, however, he was starting to seriously reconsider his decision.
With a sigh, he turned back towards his path and started walking again, disappearing in the desert.

Some new digital experiments, at last! :D
I'm really satisfied at how this work turned out, I have to say! I had a lot of fun coloring the rocks, and working on all the details on the caracal's clothing. As always, if you have any suggestions to help me improve I will be more than happy to hear it.

I also wanted to apologize for not responding to all your comments, especially those on my latest journal. I want you to know that all your feedback is super appreciated, and I'll try to reply as soon as possible (I've just been quite busy recently).

"The Wanderer", by 0laffson, is a beautiful and powerful piece, driving emotion, and pushing deep thought. The art is, quite simply, stunning to look at, with a well-balanced colour tone, and beautifully illustrated surroundings and character. The lighting used in this piece is absolutely stunning, the rich gold of the sun giving this piece a quasi-surreal feel to it, while simultaneously making sure the viewer stays grounded.

The caracal himself is well done as well, with a pose appearing dynamic, which can be hard to pull off at times. Everything about the character, from the expression in his face, to the sword at his belt, has clearly been illustrated with care and precision.

Something that is also sure not to be overlooked, is the description of the piece itself, and the character's story. Though he has no name, his story is told precisely through the description and the art itself.

Rating this deviation, as an aside note, was rather difficult, as I rarely give five stars. But this piece was well deserving of them. Another beautiful piece.

First I must start off with the fact that over all this piece is very well done, and carries a very nice cinematic aesthetic. It catches the eye from a distance, and retains a well achieved impact on audience up close as well.

The character is well drawn, with a fairly developed understanding of form in humanoid figures. The face and general head area in particular achieved a nice naturally cinematic quality with the angle and direction the character is looking, as well as the ears accenting and visually defining the character's design. I might say some of the clothing needs some small work on form, because they look very slightly flat, although still relatively well done.

The environment feels rustic and beautiful as a rocky canyon-like environment, one of my favorite cinematic themes out there. The yellowish golden lighting over all even furthers the effect, and very well achieves what I believe you were going for.

My biggest critique though is in the environmental composition. The foreground looks great, the rocks and grasses placed artistically natural in proportion to each other, although the background seems to carry a lack of composition and detail compared to the beautiful foreground. Within the background, I'll start with the left plateau, which seems to lack compositional creativity as well as detail and form. The biggest thing that bothers me about this is the fact that you have a singular flat line of the top of the plateau cutting straight through the character's chest area. Perhaps the edges of the plateau could have been progressively raised toward the left to show that the camera is in a somewhat low angle in relation to the mountain? The other mountain also seems to feel a little awkward, and also lacks detail. Perhaps lower the peak and flatten it out more, and maybe add other mountain ranges below to add to the density of the rocky mountainous environment in the distance?

The third thing that bothers me about the background is the placement of the sun. It may have been intentional to place it directly next to the characters head, but in this case it feels awkward and linear. Perhaps it may have been better to place it lower in the sky, so it doesn't follow the same horizontal line the face lies in?

The last thing that I noticed isn't really a problem as much as it is simply a matter of detail. The illustration over all has lines everywhere, sketchy lines, thick and thin, some of which you used to give the piece some hatch shading in places. I understand if this is the effect you were going for, but I thought I'd mention how I keep looking at the beauty of the colors and the subject of the piece, and keep thinking the piece deserves a painted/illustrated quality without sketched contours around everything.

Other than those points, again the piece is very good over all, and I think the rustic cinematic aesthetic is very pleasing to look at. Very well done!

Your artwork on this fantasy Feline species is really cool. I was curious if I could use one of them for a character RP? I will give you full credit under the image.

Omg, I really thought it was traditional at first! The level of detail you reached there is amazing. I love the caracal's poncho and his head-dress - his outfit resembles the one of Bedouins, but with some Indian notes in it, and that makes it quite a unique combination. :)

Thank you so much! :D I'm happy you think so, because I'm trying to keep my style as consistent as possible, and similar to my traditional works.
That's exactly what I used as references, Arabic and Indian clothing ^^

Ooh, love the detail work on this! That background that emphasizes the hot dry atmosphere, the accouterments to deal with said heat, and the watchful expression born of much experience with this land.

Wow the coloring is so much softer here! I love the effect it brings, it really gives a haziness like that of being in the heat of the desert.

The colour scheme here works SO well!  It really conveys that mood when the sun is low and everything starts assuming the same hue.  Those rocks though :O  Gorgeous!  The only way I can think of to describe it is that the colouring looks "powdery", almost like powder pastels; how you even manage that with digital is beyond me!  And that watercolour texture in the clouds is a really nice touch :)  The character design is excellent, I especially like his outfit.  The sword puzzles me a little though, the hilt is curving in the same direction as the blade, whereas I'd instinctively feel that curved sword hilts usually form a recurve of the blade, allowing for stronger strikes.  But knowing your attention to historical accuracy this is almost certainly based off an actual weapon, right?  (unless the cutting edge is on the concave side... I'm confusing myself now XD )

The accompanying description adds a lot of context and depth, I feel.  It adds a lot of emotional weight and gives the character more... 'life.'  It's always interesting to see what goes through the artist's mind.

Aw, thank you so much mate! :la: I'm really glad you liked it!
For that effect I used a brush that looks like acrylic, and lots and lots of layers. Hopefully in the future I'll learn to do it in a quicker and simpler way. ^^
The sword is indeed based on a real sword, the Filipino Ginunting (still used by marines there). :D  The edge is on the "internal" side of the curvature.

The scenic beauty of this scene is stellar. Also the journey is well conveyed through our traveler. I wonder how the sand must feel walking on barefoot to a caracal?
