Date: 27 Dec 2023 Time: 1835 JST Location: Amery Ice Shelf, Antarctica Traveled 23 miles today and I saw my first crevasse. As far as they go, this one was on the smaller side at only a meter wide and maybe a hundred long. During a rest break, I crawled over to it on my hands and knees. It may have been small, but the bastard had to be at least 50 meters deep, though the best part about getting this close was being able to see the transition from surface snow and ice, all the way to the bottom and ice that was the deepest blue I have ever seen. Other than that (and taking some pictures with the satellite phone), along with the weather being generally pleasant and cooperative (and cold), not much else for today’s entry, which is nice because it’ll give me more time to read. Also, Froddo is how old!?
Date: 31 Dec 2023 Time: 1709 JST Location: Amery Ice Shelf, Antarctica Weather decided to be a bitch today. Woke up to the usual postcard weather we’ve had since stepping off the Shirase, but by the time we had broken camp the wind had picked up to the point that walking would be faster than skiing, so that’s what we did. Fortunately, our sleds practically glide across the ice and snow, otherwise we wouldn’t have made our 15 miles. Probably going to go to bed early tonight. We’ll be leaving station number 3 behind sometime tomorrow and today’s wind was absolutely draining. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
