Joel is Having a Bad Day
(And He Really Needs A Smoke)
CHARACTERS:

JOEL, male, mid-twenties
BILLY, female, late teens to early twenties
Lights up on JOEL and BILLY, who are sitting outside on the back porch.  The three or four chairs are mismatched and seem to have been salvaged from the reject pile of a Salvation Army store.  A wooden coffee table hails from an indiscernible decade and holds a glass ashtray with dozens of cigarette butts sticking out of it. JOEL is smoking, trying to ignore BILLY.BILLY
You know, you really shouldn't; I heard somewhere that those things can make your teeth turn to mush and your fingers grow all bendy and twisted. One of my "friends"—she used to smoke a lot, too, and now her voice is so raspy and gritty we call her "Louie."  As in Armstrong.  The "Beautiful World" guy?  Hello, earth to Joel.  Come in, Joel.  Your lungs are…
JOEL
Shove off!
BILLY
Excuse me?
JOEL
I said, shove off.

Cat Trouble
My cat
Has a drug problem.
This is not a metaphor
For some friend or myself
No... My cat has a drug problem.
It all started with the sour milk
He must have gotten it from one of the other cats
Or that damned dog
And from there it was down hill
Before long he was hanging out with a bad crowd
Down at the "Kit Cat Bar"
The all feline dive down on smith street
Then whole gallons of milk started disappearing
Some were found in obscure locations smelling foul
When I confronted him he hissed
"I don’t have a problem"
Bit my nose and scratched the hell out of my face
I tried to bring him to AA
But when you try to explain
That your only there to show support
For your cat and its apparent your serious
They kick you out faster than you can say
"The cat shat in my hat!"
On the way out he stole a carton from the fridge
(That smelled as tho' it had been there since last Christmas)
And was bombed long before we got home
So like a good friend
I scooped him up and carried him the rest of the way
I

Mommy loved...
Alright, we're going to go visit Mommy.
Why are we going?
Because it would mean a lot to her. She loved you.
No, she didn't.
How can you say that?
Because it's true. If she loved us, she wouldn't have left us.
That's not fair. She had a problem. She tried to give it up.
But she didn't. She loved the pills more than us. That's why she left.

where god keeps fine china
I knew Janie since I knew my own name.  Amiably sweet, reserved in a delicate shyness.  She always saved my seat in church, sang in the choir – played the piano.  She was gentle, unassuming; the one we all looked up to.
Recently, she'd grown quieter than usual, visibly and physically absent.  Just like every Sunday prior, I showed up and let myself in.  After calling her name, I found myself standing in an empty room, devoid of sunshine – in a cluttered, disheveled mess.  Where on earth was Janie?  Beneath a tilted lampshade sat a stack of loose paper.  Scribbled haphazardly in black sharpie read:
           "sorry i'm not here. can't make it today. i will – "
The message ran off the page; I flipped it over in search of the rest.  On the lines and in the spaces of the following pages I discovered etchings, scrawled messes

Rosalie's Rehab
Rosalie Hale – Rehab of being a cold bitch
In Twilight they tried to make me go to rehab of being a cold bitch
But I said 'no, no, no'
Yes, I've been black, but when I come back
You'll know-know-know
I ain't got the time
And if Carlisle thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab of being a cold bitch
But I won't go-go-go
I'd rather be at home with Emmett
I ain't got seventy days
'Cause there's nothing
There's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from myself
I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come being cold as ice
In New Moon, they tried to make me go to rehab of being a cold bitch
But I said 'no, no, no'
Yes, I've been black, but when I come back
You'll know-know-know
I ain't got the time
And if Esme thinks I'm fine
She's tried to make me go to rehab
But I won't go-go-go
The man said "why do you think you're here?"
I said "I got no idea.
I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my Emmett,
So I always keep a mirror near."
He said "I just think you're depressed,
Kiss me

Paper-Rolled Soul
nails on glass
and I cannot sleep
        cannot live
condemn to dusty night.
stare in the mirror,
the frenzied stillness
of a pinhole eye,
and ask
'what am I
cutting?'
twelve-step is
full of narcs,
full of Narcs
that navel-gaze
through whitewash
over crumbled facade.
rehab is easy, but
cold turkey
isn't.
drown in sheets and sweat
and cable TV -
addiction
by osmosis.
my flush is stashed
my flush is stashed
my flush is stashed

and I can't do it.
no surprise there.
close the door
on that cheshire grin
curled with pipe-smoke.
close the door
and I'm alone again,
home with a cheap Bic
lighter flaring in the dark
of my paper-rolled soul.

a meaningful poem about nothing.
this is a poem about how fixing people
is not romantic.
we’re not meant to be somebody’s answer,
we’re not meant to make someone feel alive again.
this is a poem about why you shouldn’t kiss him
because he’s broken
because you want to save him.
save yourself first.
kiss him because he holds a place in your heart, not
because he's the only thing making it pump.
kiss him because he’s in your life, not because
he is your life.
hold him, but don’t hold onto him because you believe
you’re drowning.
(get to dry land first.)

this is a poem about how i find poetry in everything.
breakups. my dad telling me i mattered.
nightmares. my neighbor’s insomnia.
how it drove him crazy.
how he swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills to fix it.
my neighbor’s funeral.

this is a poem about the split-apart theory.
the idea was that when humanity became arrogant
toward the gods, we were split in two
and were doomed to spend our live

Addiction
Addiction is where you cannot let go of something. It starts off small, then increases in rate and intensity. If you do not do it, you feel extremely anxious and you can't focus. You find a way to be alone so you can do it. For example, you will sit in the deserted stairwell at the roof level so you can get your fix. Yet you hope for someone to discover you, because as strange as it sounds: You want to be by yourself, but you don't want to be alone.
At first people don't know, then they find out or you tell them straight up. They interrogate you and take away your addiction by force. That makes you relieved at first, then angry at your next urge. But your desire makes you suddenly creative and you discover 10 more ways to get the rush. You're always on your guard now. You can't trust them, nor they you. You dread a day when you're exposed again.
That's when you hear that you should give up your addiction. Over and
