Santorini has been voted the most beautiful island in the world, and I have to agree. It is quite stunning, with its white buildings and blue roofs, on top of the cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. But that seems to be the extent of Santorini’s charms. Like a beauty queen, who gets by on her looks, and nothing else. It’s as if Santorini says, “I’m pretty!” “Yes, but do you have any ancient, archaeological sites or medieval ruins, something of historic significance? Did you have important roles in either of the World Wars?” “I’m pretty!” “Okay. Do you have any importance to the Greek economy besides tourism? Do you have any exports or some products that have a world-side appeal?” “I’M PRETTY!” All righty then. Santorini’s beauty comes mainly in the form of the sheer cliffs, rising from the ocean as you approach the cruise port, with the village of Oia sitting on the top
