The desert around her was scorching hot and the air shimmered in the corner of her eyes. The red mountains in the far distance wavered in and out of focus in the intense heat, making it hard to focus on anything. She hadn't expected it to get quite so hot when she decided to take a tour out to the scrubland closer to the mountains than the herd usually went. They tended to stay closer to the coast to be able to get relief from the oppressive sun out in the cool ocean water. But today she has been stupid enough to want to explore away from the rest of the herd and walk the open desert. Calcite sighed and stopped her slow trek, giving herself a moment to rest. She really hoped she would at least come across one of the scattered oases that she knew were around here somewhere. But the haze around her and blistering sun in her eyes made it hard to see anything much less knowing if it was real or just a mirage. In truth she could not even know for sure that the mountains in the distance
