Scene 1
At top of show, Grande drape is drawn or lights focused tight on a bench down stage. Preshow/overture fades as we hear the sound of a train whistle, steam engine at throttle, wheels rolling along tracks. Lights come up on mother and child sitting in private coach seat. Both are dressed in the fashion of 1905. The child, a boy about seven yrs. of age appears to be getting sleepy as looking through a kaleidoscope, he nestles close to his mother. Sound of train fades to low level.
CHILD. Mother, will it take us long?
