The millions of stray dogs (<i>perros vagos</i>) in Chile form a distinctive aspect of its urban landscape. They are everywhere -- In the streets, outside shops, lazing in the parks, begging in the town squares...

I once asked a Chilean friend why there are so many homeless dogs in the streets, to which he replied jokingly,

"It's to keep all the homeless people warm at night."

I found something heartachingly sad, yet strangely poetic in that answer...
