Artist's Statement

A Valentine's Day picture of Widdershins. He's an impy little forest sprite, about a foot tall. I'm very fond of this character and I hope people like this rendition of him.

***

Mischievous, playful and gremlin-like, though not mean-spirited, Widdershins lives in a shrine to an old forest deity. When travelers pass his shrine, he pops into view, dances a jig, and then asks a toll or token of each person for his deity. Money has no worth to Widdershins other than how sparkly it is. For this reason, his "trove" contains mostly random junk. Pennies, cat's eye marbles, paper clips, buttons and screws are valuable trinkets to this little fae.

If the traveler so chooses not to pay Widdershins's toll, and in so doing disrespects his deity, he plays a harmless but annoying prank on them, such as summoning a cloud of bees on the offender's head, turning all their clothes inside-out, or causing their hair to erupt in flowers.

If a person treats it nicely, Widdershins sometimes returns favors.
