Imaginez-vous la vie (si c'en est une...) des pauvres bougres, bien souvent enrôlés de force, qui devaient servir ces canons, sur toutes les mers du globe, avec de maigres rations faites de biscuits durs, de viande séchée et, pour autant que la mer soit calme, d'un brouet, souvent rance, mitonné dans de grandes marmites…
Cependant, à force d'exercices mille fois recommencés, les douze hommes constituant un "peloton de pièce" arrivaient, au plus fort de la bataille, à refroidir, nettoyer, recharger, ramener leur canon au sabord, pointer et faire feu toutes les nonante secondes, deux fois plus vite que leurs quinze homologues français !
Les canons étaient nommées d'après le poids (en livres) des boulets qu'ils pouvaient tirer. Ainsi sur un vaisseau trois-ponts, hormis les caronades de 60 livres et les canons de 8 livres des gaillards d'avant et d'arrière qui tiraient le plus souvent la mitraille de près, il y avait sur le 3e pont des canons de 12 livres, pesant près d'une tonne, tirant des boulets en fonte de 5,5 kg de la taille d'une orange. Sur le 2e pont il y avait les canons de 24 livres tirant des boulets de 11 kg de la taille d'un pamplemousse, enfin, dans la batterie principale, sur le 1er pont se trouvaient les plus gros canons, de 32 à 40 livres pourvus de boulets de 14,5 à 18 kg.

Imagine the life (if it is one...) of those poor men, very often recruited by force, which was to serve these guns, on all the seas of the earth, with thin rations of hard biscuits, dried meat and, in so far as the sea either calms, of a soup, often rancid, cooked in large pots... However, at force of thousand times repeated, the twelve men constituting a "gun-team" arrived, with most extremely of the battle, to cool, clean, reload their gun, to point and make fire every ninety seconds! The guns were named according to the weight (in pounds) of the bullets which they could shoot. Thus on a three-deck vessel, except the caronades (smashers) of 60 pounds and the guns of 8 pounds of the forecastles and of aft which generally drew the grapeshot from close, there was on the upper gun-deck, guns of 12£ , weighing nearly a ton, shooting iron bullets of 5.5 kg of the size of an orange, on the second battery-deck there were the guns of 24£ shooting bullets of 11 kg of the size of a grapefruit, finally, in the first battery-deck, were the biggest canons, from 32 to 40£ equipped with bullets of 14.5 to 18 kg.
