<b>AMPHION</b> Yacht Royal de Suède (1778-1850)

Conçu et réalisé comme embarcation de régate avec un gréement de goélette pour usage et plaisir du roi de Suède, ce Yacht fut aussi utilisé comme navire de commandement durant la guerre contre la Russie, de 1788 à 1790. C’est en effet à bord de l'AMPHION que le roi Gustave III, assisté du Lieutenant-Colonel Carl Olof CRONSTEDT, dirigea les 9 et 10 juillet 1790 la victorieuse et historique bataille de SVENSKSUND contre la flotte impériale russe de Catherine II.
L'AMPHION fut construit au chantier naval de Djurgarden (Stockholm). Lancé en 1778, on peut suivre sa trace jusqu'en 1850. L'étude du plan original, un chef-d’œuvre d'harmonie et de pureté de ligne, est de Frederik-Henrik Af CHAPMAN, le premier architecte naval qui utilisa des calculs mathématiques précis pour l'étude de la construction des navires au lieu des méthodes empiriques et artistiques de ce temps. Ce modèle représente le yacht royal tel qu'il devait être aux environs de 1790, avec un gréement à phares carrés de "brick" bien plus manœuvrant dans une bataille navale que le gréement de type "goélette" qu’il retrouvera plus tard.

Conceived and realized like boat of regatta with rigging of schooner for use and pleasure of Swedish king, this yacht was also used as command-ship during the 1788-1790 war against Russia. It is indeed on board AMPHION that the king Gustavo III, assisted by the Lieutenant-colonel Carl Olof CRONSTEDT, directed July the 9, and 10 1790 the victorious one and historical battle of SVENSKSUND (Ruotsinsalmi), against the Russian imperial fleet of Catherine II. The AMPHION was built at the shipyard of Djurgarden (Stockholm). It was launched in 1778, and one can follow his trace until 1850. Its poop is preserved at the Navy’s National Museum in Stockholm. The study of the original plan, one masterpiece of harmony and purity of line, is of Frederik-Henrik Af CHAPMAN, the first naval architect who used precise mathematical calculations for the study of the construction of the ships instead of the empirical and artistic methods of the time. This model represents the royal yacht such as it was to be about 1790, with square sails of "brig" much more manoeuvring in a naval battle that of "schooner" it will find later.
