Artist's Statement
Early in the Miocene, the first pronghorns entered into North America, where they then underwent a huge radiation.
The tall beast with the fork-like horns is Paracosoryx loxoceros, from Nebraska, and below it is Subparacosoryx savaronis. The small goat-like pronghorn with the broccoli-like horns is Merriamoceros coronatus, from California. Behind it is the dromomerycid Cranioceras unicornis, a member of a related group of deer/antelope-like ungulates that lived (and died) only in Miocene North America. |
