Shelby Springs Cemetery - Calera, Alabama
This was a Day trip for me, alone, in the middle of a confederate graveyard. It was eerie approaching the place, I think partly because of the rain that had been falling for most of the day. It really put things into perspective, standing among the stones, realizing that you are the only one out there that's actually alive. Several feet beneath you are soldiers, nameless, faceless, known only to their maker. An odd story follows this. Standing in the middle of this place you can hear, back to your left, behind you if you're facing the backs of the graves, the steady passing of cars on the small, yet busy road along AL-42, but the longer you stand there, the more the sounds meld together. I found myself hearing a steady rhythm. At one point, my ears began to fool themselves, and I swore I could hear it clearly, the rhythmic pounding of a drum. |
