I took a brisk walk last night through the neighborhood. The streets were bare and the sounds of silence were in the air like a Simon and Garfunkel song. The lack of sound made me think of a lot of things. To me, silence is a way of expressing without words, a feeling that goes beyond the normal realm of things. With the sound of silence, the screen of privacy is removed by an icy exhaling breath. It allows us to see rainbows in spider webs, or to smell wildflowers as if they were soaked in exotic perfumes. The sound of silence soothes our emotions, creating texture for our dreams in shapes and colors otherwise unseen. Most people are afraid of silence. I’m not sure why that is? Maybe it’s the emptiness or loneliness but I made use of this time to think about my life as it is right now. I thought about the strangeness in the way ones life can so easily change from day to day. I thought about all the lives I’ve touched throughout my life and wondered what difference I might have made in theirs . . . I went home to write.
