The challenge for me here was trying to create a "soft focus" feel on the outer edges, like the ref pic. I don't have a lot of experience with that effect, but I've known for a long time that out of focus backgrounds, when done correctly, can have the BIGGEST effect on "fooling the brain" into thinking it sees reality. Now, perfecting that technique will take a while.
