In times of old there came to a city five mammoth works of steal and stone formed as men. “Come Brothers.” They would say, “Let us stand before these people and buildings. Let us stand before these trees and mountains. Let all see and praise our magnificence!” And the colossi stood as monuments to the people. They stood knowing that none could be as great as they, and many believed this, and praised the gargantuan five. Others however sought greater heights then what the colossi knew of. They would look towards the moon and stars where their dreams resided; and the sunrise where all new tales begin; and the evening twilight in which the land finds tranquility in the sun’s own slumber.
     The colossal brothers saw this and demanded “Why do you gaze away from our heights! What is it you see beyond us?” The people made the living towers look for themselves upon what was a sunset that today all the land would behold. Every worshipper turned to watch as the giants marched methodically to the horizon where the sun perched against the sky afire. The silhouetted figures loomed now on the horizon to make threats on sky itself. With envy they tried to steal the luster of dancing sunset on lofty clouds, and darkened tree lines upon golden twilight, failing to replace it with their own towering majesty. With this tainted pride they stood tall, stark and in defiance of what all things know to be greater than they. Even greater than the gathering of the five.
     Depthless anger burnt within them at this truth, for the vast field above was beyond even their height and reach. That burning rage within began to spew poison towards their resentment. The sky sat, uncaring or unnoticing of this gesture. Furious now they charged at the sun and its clouds and its sky until, to the people of the city, the five vanished over the horizon along with their prey. Both the worshippers of skies and giants looked to the stars before slumber.
     A thunderous boom awoke them. The dawn of a new day crept into the clear sky as more thunder echoed just below it. Soon the poisonous black plumes which now adorned the crowns of those walking monuments wafted into sight followed by the heaving forms of the five. They were as a storm of steel and stone full of tired wrath. Their course clearly set, those mountains walked and lurched as nothing so colossal should be able to. With thunderous weight their motions punished the earth until finally, at noon with sky at its full and unreachable height above the city, they stopped. Five heads billowing dark clouds became locked upwards. They tracked the sky and its sun and clouds with disbelief as it slowly, effortlessly crept until once more sunset had arrived. The goliaths turned their attention to the people, and while some in that city peered up towards the now lethargic monuments, they could see a questioning look on the faces of those who once worshipped them. “We cannot be bested by this coward sky.” The giants spoke, some with an earthen tremor of fear and others softly as gusts of wind in despair. “Let us hasten on, for it now sits in rest!”
     The mountains charged the horizon and vanished beyond it; their goal forever above them. They left the people and their city with the freedom to look skyward towards what all now realized were true heights. They looked to the clouds and sky, and to the sun and moon, and to the stars where all their dreams resided.
