They put meat on a glass jar, then sealed it, partially, with a gauze tissue, protecting the meat from the exterior. With time, the meat got rotten and then larvae came out of that dead flesh.
They thought that the larvae appeared from nothing.
For a long period, "spontaneous generation" was considered reality.
