The “Crystalline Reflections” series originally came out of two discarded ideas from my abandoned “Moon Cities” series*. I had generated images of different sized squares to suggest city blocks, buildings, and streets. These eventually became the “Crystalline Squares” series. I had also tried using Pixelmator’s kaleidoscope filter to try to suggest regular structures on the moon. Neither of these worked in their original context, but while I was pondering how I could turn the “Crystalline Squares” series into a Winter series, I remembered the kaleidoscope effect . I adjusted the number of reflections to six to suggest snowflakes and started playing. I ended up with an enormous amount of good images. I printed and adjusted fifteen of these to become the final “Crystalline Reflections” series, but there are probably twice that number waiting in the wings...
