Artist's Statement
Having the botanical name of Sanguinaria canadensis, Bloodroot represents the only one species of the genus. It is the member of the family Papaveraceae inhabiting to eastern North America from Nova Scotia, Canada southward to Florida.
This flowering plant has such common names as Bloodwort, Coon Root,Snakebite,Sweet Slumber, Indian Plant or Red Puccoon Root. The perennials can grow from 20 to 50 cm tall, typically with one large, sheath-looking multi-lobed leaf in the width of 12 cm. The blooming time is March, April and May. The inflorescence is composed of 8-12 white-pure-colored petals and yellowish reproductive parts. The blooms occur over clasping foliage while flowering. |
