A Brief Examination of Politics in the Modern World:
(Date: 2122 AD)

The increasingly scarce amounts of resources on the planet today have proven to be an extremely important factor in the international political scene. As countries (including former "superpowers") fell into deep periods of civil disorder due to increasing rates of death and world-wide famine, a once benign political organization, the United Nations, rose to power. After officially declaring itself the new world government in 2100, the UN quickly made a series of internal changes. First, the General Assembly's power in deciding matters was reduced to an insignificant amount. A 3 man group known as the Consulate was established, becoming the de facto leadership of the organization. All semblance of democracy would quickly fade, and the pragmatic nature of the Consulate lent itself to autocratic practices. Soon, through a series of political maneuvers, the UN placed itself as the international controller of natural resources. It would hold sway over regional governments, its word backed by a large "peacekeeping" force. However, in recent years, general discontent has increased, and it is unclear whether the organization will be able to remain in power for much longer.
