Artist's Statement

Righto, here's a new little sauropodomorph, the ancient Early Jurassic Massospondylus carinatus. It's from the Hettangian Stage, 200 million years ago, from South Africa.

It was small, around 13 feet in length, and very lightly built. The Upper Elliot Formation, in which it was found, was probably not a mountain region with pines, but we don't even know if these things were maroon! :p, so, technically, I have used artistic license too here. However, judging by remains of hatchlings in the nests, with large eyes and cute babyish features, we know it was a caring animal. Thus, a juvenile with its mum under a greyish sky seemed like a nice pic.
