Artist's Statement

Dimensions: 1"-1.5" x 1.75"-2" x 20" each

The bodies of these lilies are translucent Italian alabaster, carved, wherever possible, to about 1/32" or less in thickness. This leaves them fragile, but takes advantage of the quality of the stone. You can see through them just about everywhere but near the base.

The color is mixed calligraphy ink applied with an airbrush. It picks up the light and doesn't hinder the effect of the stone at all.

The base of each is sculpted polymer clay. It scared the hell out of me to bake them, hoping I wasn't going to change the character of the stone with the heat! I got really lucky!

The stems are curly maple, soaked in warm water and curved to look as natural as possible. The clay was applied and worked after the stem was inserted into the flower. (Placing these to bake was an interesting endeavor...)

The stems are airbrushed with green airbrush paint, tinted with calligraphy ink to keep the consistency light. It's overlaid with a pearlized fluorescent for effect.

The photo was another spot of good luck. These lilies are amazing difficult to photograph! I had tried *again* to get them with the flash off and, frustrated, placed the spot I was using face up on the table to think...and got this effect. I was able to capture it, thank goodness!

I hope someone appreciates all that went into these. I think they are some of my favorites so far.
