Artist's Statement
Again another piece with a meaning that has evolved over time. Depicting an upright Fuji reflected by an upside down Fuji, this sculpture was meant to display the dichotomous environment of Japan's natural monument. Firstly, the mountain itself is seen as a symbol of wealth, eternity, and unparalleled balance. Its surrounding environment, Aokigahara, however, gives this location a much more grim personality, as the forest is the world's second most popular suicide location and is rumored to be haunted.
A few years after creating this piece, I had the amazing privilege to climb the mountain and witness one of the most beautiful and transcendental views I've ever had. It was like my fellow climbers and I were on an island sailing through the clouds, and as the horizon seemed to bend away before our eyes, the sky took over our vision, and space seemed only a few steps away. This piece now reminds me of ascension, and that feeling suspension in the sky. Or maybe the thinned air at the summit just got to my head... |
