Artist's Statement
A male Yellow-Banded (or "Bumblebee") Poison Dark Frog at the Franklin Park Zoo, Boston Massachusetts.
Found in the northern regions of the Amazon, in the forests of Venezuela, Guyana, Columbia and Brazil, this species represents one of the most exquisitely toxic venomous species on the planet. It is unclear which kinds of arthropods or other small prey items this creature eats to extract the toxins it excretes through it's skin, but the neurotoxin causes neural paralysis and eventual heart failure. The Golden Dart Frog is generally agreed to be one of the most toxic animals on the planet, with enough poison in it's skin at any given time to kill 100,000 mice. |
