Artist's Statement

This image is very big. Consider downloading the full-size version from the button to the right to zoom in more - though be warned, it is 20 megabytes.

Description:

Restoration of an American Civil War photograph from 1865, showing the Lt. Comdr. Edward Barrett and Lt. Cornelius N. Schoonmaker of the U.S. Monitor "Catskill" at Battery Bee, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, one of the defenses for the city of Charlston - which had obviously not worked against the U.S. Monitor "Catskill", as these two are from the Union side. The photographer is evidently unknown.

Work done:

I removed dust and damage, composited a second image taken at the same time over some damaged areas, and reconstructed the rightmost part of the stone wall (approximately the rightmost stones [the right half of the biggest]), since the damage only went down to the bottom of the stone wall proper, leaving the mound under it and wooden decking largely untouched.

Time taken: I'd probably say around 20 hours, if not more. I've been working on this for weeks.

Source:

This was composited from two photographs in scans provided by the Library of Congress. Both are available at [link]

99% of the image was just [link] but [link] was used to fill in some damaged areas in the area of duplication.
