Artist's Statement

(2006) 9"x 3", Size 15 seed beads (matte dark green iris, matte green iris, matte light green, transparent copper lined), green jade beads, copper-fumed crystal beads, nylon thread.

Thanks, :iconamelieblaque: for your fabulous suggestion! This series will comprise all four elements done in individual bead bracelet designs. I don't know why I hadn't thought about doing a series of elemental pieces before.

For "Water" I picked copper as the metal of choice, due to its strong affinity to green and the planet Venus (which has strong water connotations), and because I wanted to reserve silver for "Air". Pale green and dark jade serves for the stones. The pattern reminded me of splashing water. Starting from darkest green the beads become lighter, until the pattern reaches its glossy, shimmery copper core.

Many traditional symbolic systems associate "Water" with blue, and "Air" with yellow, however, I feel more comfortable with the opposing elements of "Fire" and "Water" having the complementary colors of red and green, and "Air" and "Earth" being associated with the complementary pair of blue and yellow respectively.
