This painting was something I started back in May 2004 when Henry County Police Officer Jimmy Gilber was killed in the line of duty an exit up from where I live. Since then, another Henry County Police Officer (Chuck Haist) has also died in the line of duty, responding to fellow Officers.
Some might say that the flag background is cheesy or cliche, but it has grown on me. There are some issues with the painting and some flat areas, but it has gotten to a point where I am not going to be working on it any longer. The print will not have the title and seal at the bottom.
I was going to initially title this "10-7" which is our code for "Out of Service". At an Officer's funeral they typically do a "last call over the radio" and put the Officer's unit number out of service. I opted for Final Salute as I felt it better fit the image.
