Artist's Statement
A large French Infantryman in Khaki uniform carrying a Chatellerault M1924/29 LMG, enlarged for comical purposes.
The French were very demoralized even before the war began. While Germany supplied his army a whole new set of weapons, armor, planes and strategies, the French Army still used many weaponry from the Great War. Still wearing the sky blue uniform until 1935, France was not ready for a Second World War. Even with more than six million men in arms, it only took two weeks for the German forces to completely succesfully invade the country. It took the support of the other Allied countries for France to find new faith in combat for freedom. |
