There's a story here, a very dark one. This is the Queen of Broken Hearts, whose duty it is to stitch together all the broken hearts she finds and hang them in her gallery where they cannot be harmed again.

She is wife to the King of Shattered Dreams, but she is forever unhappy because she does not love him. He does love her, however, but his mind is just as shattered as the dreams over which he presides. One day, he wanted to see a smile on his Queen's face, but when he tried to put one there, he ended up cutting her cheeks in the shape of a distorted grin.

Some conjecture that the Queen breaks the hearts herself so she can add more to her collection, but I will leave it up to you to decide whether you believe that or not.

She is eternally sad, though, for no matter how many other hearts she stitches up, she can never repair her own.
