The long-awaited next installment of my Portal Wallpaper series. Sorry to have kept you guys waiting so long, but I've had a lot of stuff happening lately and it completely slipped my mind.

Anyway, this wallpaper obviously features the turrets from the game. Made, as usual, in Garry's Mod for Half-Life 2. I had to import NPCs for the turrets to get it to open and shoot, which was annoying because it was a bitch to get a good screenshot. The background quotes were taken from Wikiquote, because I honestly do not know how I could possibly get all the different lines from the game itself.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, I'll be working on the final one now, featuring the Weighted Companion Cube. :D

Sooo, this has been sitting in one of my folders that i used ro hold my drawings for well over a year now. I found it a few days ago and decided that I should share it.

This is a compilation piece done by :iconcouchmasta: and myself. we made it during school sometime. I know that I spent my time in history class working on some of these.

Originally there were going to be some small illustrations that would accompany it, however I never got to them, and probably won't unless I get a super drawing urge that i cannot stop. Alas, though, i have enough on my plate.
However, if anybody does want to illustrate this, just ask me and I will proudly give my permission to said person(s).

Other than that, there is much to say.

Our first 4 week project at school, I used about about 5-6 weeks though, extra time both before and after the deadline. You can just keep adding so many details :P

When I was brain storming, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to create something that required more texturing than modeling, since I was pretty inexperienced with that, so I had to incorporate that somehow. I found a picture done by Escher called "Relativity stairs" and since I was also playing Portal at the time I thought the project would be perfect to test my skills on.

Everything you see in the picture was made by me, I took loads of reference pictures from within the game, but ultimately I recreated everything myself to get the style that you find within the game.

This is the result, picture took approx 9 hours to render.

Note: Added a picture that shows some of the different stages how I created this picture [link]

Edit: I made a very large version of the image available for download (22mb). So people will be able to get their own print made. Just don't begin selling prints without my permission, or Valves for that matter.

Edit: Wow, daily deviation. Thanks a lot :D
And thanks for all the kind responses, always nice to see something you put this much time into get appreciated.

Yeah I know, I couldn't think o anything more creative for a title. It's been awhile since I've done somthing just for me, not a comission, not a comic, all for me. I need to get back to doing that, if nothing else it makes it easier for me to update NWF since I don't get burnt out on it as easily.

This is from teh game Portal. AMAZING game although way way way way way too short. I jsut love the feel for it, adn the dry humor(I dunno if it's suposed to be funny but i think the robot 'narrator'/enemy GLADOS is hillarious)

at one point GLADOS informs you that 'Unlike people the weighted companion cube will never betray you or threaten to stab you, and in fact cannot speak. If it begisn to speak, please disregard it's advice' or somthing along those lines(its been awhile since ive played)

but yeah the 'will never stab yuo' thing stuck in my head.

Figured I better post something again. I was up to a whopping EIGHT watchers a while ago (jealous?), but now it went back to six. I'm not claiming to be a great artist or anything, but right now my problem isn't skill, it's giving a damn. You know that feeling?

Anyway, I like simple wallpapers. And after playing Portal I knew I needed a Companion Cube wall (the littler bugger's got his own Facebook profile for pete's sake), but people always seem to insist on putting text or silly overlays or just make them in the wrong dimensions. So I just made my own. I originally wanted to do something with Chell in it, but I thought I'd wait until Episode 3 to see if they fill out her personality, you know, so that she actually has one.

Companion Cube, pure and simple, there to stay with you til' the end!!!

Or a least until you euthanize him.

You monster.

As usual, the categories mystify me. Hopefully more complex art next time.

edt: as proof of the cube's undying love, here are some pre-existing walls from other artists if you prefer. Most just use the original game model, but are still nice. And though one of them psychologically damages the cube, i seem to be the only one to just give him a good beating. I'm a bad person.:

I beat Portal yesterday. To celebrate my triumph, I treated myself to cake.

This was, in part, inspired by the toon-photo fusion art that Hawk of Applegeeks (applegeeks.com) does from time to time.

Photo + screenshot (behind Chell) + Photoshop. hooray!

"The symptoms most commonly produced by Enrichment Center testing are superstition, perceiving inanimate objects as alive, and hallucinations. The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak."

I've been trying SO DAMN HARD not to love La Boîte Orange. I saw all the great TF2 clips, I saw Portal in action, I heard about the cool-ass commentary on HL2. All the same, I tried. I know my computer probably can't run it, I don't have a 360, I'm no good at FPSs, I wouldn't have the reflexes for some of the puzzles, I'd never have time to play, etc. etc. etc.

But then the other day I heard the song.

Now I warn you, there are spoilers all over the place, but this song ([link]) got me interested. I looked up a lot about the game, and found out all about its insane humour, all of which culminated in this song (and possibly some cake). Upon further inspection, there was also a relatively intriguing storyline and more importantly a cube. For those of you who know me better, you'd understand perfectly when I say that sealed the deal.

I'm gonna save up and pick me up a copy sometime soon. *sigh*

Since I can't play it just yet, I ended up listening to that damn song on repeat for hours and ended up making this sprite. I'm not terribly happy with Chell there (she's not spritey enough, not practical) but the cube looks exactly how I wanted it, couldn't possibly have asked for better on that one. Hit the download link for a doublesize version!

I'm a big fan of Portal, and decided to make some motivational wallpapers inspired by the game and the corporation Aperture Science :) I'm rather pleased with the result.

This is inspired by their in game poster which many of you may have seen in the 'secret' rooms!

It's been too long since I've submitted a damsel in distress piece.

So, anyway, I went out this weekend and I got the Orange Box for 360, and I instantly fell in love with Portal. I beat it in two and half hours, and wished it was so much longer than the twenty or so levels it gives you. But then again, fifty more levels or even five hundred more levels wouldn't have been enough either. I've never been a fan of puzzle games, but the quirky, deadpan sense of humor, the graphics, and the innovative idea of shooting yourself across the course by falling through an infinite time-space continuum was enough to win me over.

And, of course, the lovable Aperture Science Facility Weighted Companion Cube, seen here with the protagonist, Chell. He will never threaten to stab you, and always gives good advice.

So please, Chell, when you get loose and have used him to complete your objectives, don't incinerate him just because he was heavy when you had to scoot him to the button. He loves you, and will eat your cake with you.

Note: please download to fullview. Long picture is loooong.

SPOILERS FOR THE END OF PORTAL

Well, I watched the end of Portal today. X3;

I love GLaDOS. :3 It's so insane and it mocks you throughout the entire "fight". XDDD

The picture is sketchy and the colouring is lousy, because I wanted you to focus on the text, which is a collection of GLaDOS' quotes from the battle. X33;;

I gave it a red eye because... I really don't know why. XDDD

Go, GLaDOS, goo~ ;3;

:iconrodrevmcfox: gave me some inspiration when he drew my Commission [link] that I refer to as "Portal Blooper #1".
Now, I'm not done with arsing around with Portal. I planned to make a series out of the blooper ideas I came up with. I'm still unsure about wether or not I'll do that, but here's my new ID anyway. Spent a few hours on it.

This may be the first drawing in my life that I didn't use ANY black (at least not 100% black) in.

As requested, construction pics of the companion cube (see my scraps area for the original deviation).

First I gutted a cheap remote controlled car for some electronic parts. Then I created a wiring harness for the cube. The battery pack you see in the picture can be removed. To make the cube glow, you just plug in the pack and wait about a minute. The cube will glow for about 10 minutes before it needs another charge.

Then I cut out the Plexiglas pieces I needed. I attached the capacitors to one of the pieces and created a slot for the battery pack's plug. Then I assembled the Plexiglas into a box, making sure I attached the LEDs to each face (I lost this pic :( ).

After the box was complete, I coated it in thin sheet aluminum, leaving tracks for the lights. Then I covered the cube in model magic, which stuck straight to the aluminum.

The pic with my laptop gives you an idea of size. You can also see it in my living room, with the lights on, and then the lights off.

Cheers,
- Rishi

A celebration of video gaming. Namely first person shooters. Drawn for a local gaming magazine. A tie in with the Noise Singapore exhibition thingy in which one of my artworks is to be exhibited. Did not have too much time to work on it nor polish the concept. Definitely glad I managed to pull it off while rushing for a class assignment.

How many characters and games represented can you recognise?

According to :icontdi-exile::

"I loved VALVe's game PORTAL.
It was such a refreshing experience for a video game.

I thought it'd be funny for Izzy to be put in the
“Aperture Science Computer-aided Enrichment Centre”.
Here's Izzy tripping backwards thru her own portal.
I was planning on designing a whole maze room to put her in but I never got around to it."

Now there was a challenge for me! Never seen the series or played the game, so I simply rendered and/or coloured this one according to various screenshots uploaded in cyberspace. May not be exact, so still, close enough...!

The last word I leave to "da grrl" herself:

IZZY (excitedly/quickly/psyched): "Oh, wow, have you guys ever played PORTAL? I have, it's a really cool game, sooo cool! Like you're in this 3D world with steel walls and floors and you're this virtual version of yourself wearing this hideously orange/brown coloured body suit and you've got this neat device on your arm, like it's got some kind of grab arms and wires and an indicator light, and all you gotta do is create these portals and, like, you just go through them?? Like wow!!

(stops suddenly)

(realizing): Okay, sooo .... I talk too quickly sometimes. No worries. It's not, like, I'm insane or anything like that..."

Hi guys! Some of you might be wondering what the T7V in the title means... Well, I'll tell you! It stands for "Top 7 Villains". That's right, folks, I'm making my own personal top 7 favorite villains list. See, I missed villainy week this year (and for several past years, too!)... I decided, heck with it. I'll do something for it anyway, even if I am late. XD

So yes! For the next 7 days I'll be posting fanarts of my favorite villains, and explain why I like them in the comments. Yay!
***

Number 7 on my list is GLaDOS from Portal!

Ah, GLaDOS... what's not to love about a psychotic AI that will kill you in the name of science? She lies to you with the most pleasant, almost musical computer voice too, no less!
At the beginning of Portal, she seems nice and helpful, offering you cake as a reward for completing the test chambers... But the more you listen to her, the more apparent it is that she doesn't care much for your safety, and then you finally realize she's trying to off you. Which is really not a good thing, what with nearly everything in the facility being controlled by her and all...

Also, the song she sings at the end of the game is still one of my favorite songs ever. Hooray for "Still Alive"!

"As part of a previously mentioned required test protocol, we can no longer lie
to you. When the testing is over, you will be... Missed."

Here's an update of my old pixel art portal test chamber.

Here's the level guide :P

You start off in the room with the red button. Fire a portal into the little gap in the wall where the crate logo is. Get some crates out of there and take them into the second room with you.

Next, I thought I'd invent a new type of contraption for portal - scales. Drop the crates on the scale to reach the weight of 50/50 to open the door.

Or you can escape to a behind the scenes area by firing a portal through that crack in the wall :D

Lots of fun making this. Please let me know what you think.

I liked the other pOrtal pics so much I thought I would apply the portal to a scene. It was guna be a quicky picture but it started to get out of hand and become to complex so Ive cut it short, conciquentally there are some things that lack detail and somethings that arn't right, I might go back and redo it latter because right now I really don't have the time!
