The world of source code can be pretty daunting even for experts, but there is an art and intrinsic beauty to it as well, and trying to make things work is less science and more art when it comes to finding solutions; watching some complex task suddenly fall into place is nothing short of satisfying.
For quite some time now I've been playing around with compression algorithms and theory, seeing how well I can compress English text losslessly. Given how many modern file formats are text-based (e.g. HTML, Word documents etc), it's quite a general-purpose function.
