You're Not Alone
“Sometimes we lay aside our own troubles when we wipe away another's tears.”

his life is not easy; a winding, sometimes whimsical, sometimes tragic journey that ultimately finds terminus in the same common destination for each of us. No matter the brave, fierce constructs we build and serve that would have us believe we are each one of us all alone as we make this journey, we make our way toward the end of all things side-by-side in our community of the living each day defying death. Our paths may be wildly divergent—the way of the hungry and impoverished traveling the same timeline with the grotesquely indulgent, the very best of us side-by-side with the most evil of us; but all headed for the same fate: dust. I've had loads of people over the past few months ask me to create tutorials.
I never have. I'm not sure when I will, and I'll tell you why. Deviantart is filled to the brim with the most *awful* tutorials. And now that "Tutorials" have a priority category ( meaning they get to the front page every single time regardless of how many hits they get), some users have been creating tutorial after tutorial just to abuse that loop hole.
Thing is, I find a lot of these people who create the tutorials, have no business creating them in the first place o_o;. Some of them ( not all) aren't doing it to be helpful to the masses. Some of them are doing it to try to make one (to see if they can set it up, to see if they can make it interactive), or to see if they can use the exploit. Those people are not helping you.
DeviantART Deleting AccountsThere appears to be a new rumour flying around in various journals and comments that deviantART will be deleting accounts. The information seems to be spreading using messaging similar to what is here:More Like This
On 21 of may, deviantart will be deleting all accounts. Not plz accounts. accounts , But just all name-wasted accounts, or accounts that we think are fake, or that are useless. We are doing this to prevent something that could possibly may happen in the future. If we find this message on your deviantID, journal, etc. We will know that your not fake.
Thank you for listening
First, allow me to reiterate that there is no truth to this. DeviantART would never convey information this way and official information is always posted through hq

The Myth of TalentThe Myth of TalentMore Like This
If there's one comment that is made more often than any other on any decent piece of artwork it's "you're so talented."
It's also the one [positively intended] comment I've seen the most artists bristle at, sometimes even retort. For some of us, it's a pet hate. Why?
We know it's meant as a compliment, so we smile and say thank you and try to resist the urge to insist that 'talent' is the biggest myth there is. Not only is it a myth, at its worst the use of the word is potentially destructive to the artistic community.
What's so wrong with the word 'talent'?
You might not realise it, but calling someone talented can often feel like a backhanded compliment. No skilled artist woke up one day just being able to do what they can do. We were all born completely unable to do just about anything useful. But through daily practise we learned how to use our limbs for motility, our voices for words, an

After careful consideration, I decided to go on with the feature for points plan.
The general idea is to give beginning artists the chance to have their artwork featured on my front page. This might seem pointless to some, especially since there are busy services out there (like dAhub) that give you points for faving and watching artists. But hold on, it might just be worth it for you. With services like dAhub there's no guarantee your watchers will eventually keep active, or even like your work. In contrary to that kind of service, my feature won't give you points for watching or faving. Any person that watches you, will do so out of
Why many artists suck at marketingWell. I can at least say that the average artist's mentality towards marketing never ceases to amaze me.More Like This
Either the guys here are young and naive --that's what I hope it is, since still being pure hearted in a time like this is good-- or they are willingly unaware of what's happening around them.
It all started with a question that came to my mind.
Would people be willing to pay a few point in exchange for a feature on a busy page?
How I got to the idea?
Well, I'm doing contests and giveaways now and then. Things for the community, you'd say. To get some feedback, feature stuff, promoting unknown artists, and that kind of stuff. In order to host those contests and giveaways I often need DeviantArt points. Now, I do get a lot of them by sheer donation. But that always seemed a bit empty to me. So I thought up some kind of idea. To give beginning artists the chance to get featured, and make use of the traffic on my page, in order to get their work viewed by people all over the website. S

Today I read a bit (or more) into the comments some people left at a poll :icondamaimikaz: did (go there and read if you're curious). It left me baffled and angry because so many people are frankly UNDERselling themselves and their art.
One girl wrote me a while ago and ask for my opinion on her prices- privately because most people seem to suck at giving a critical opinion or give a decent mental clout... or two. Whatever helps. I still hope she got rid of the annoying customer who sounded like one from hell. Where he hopefully trolled back into.
Here's my two cents regarding the topic and please read carefully and make up your mind if you fall into the "sell cheap" category.
First of all I could ignore what price you sell your art for because it's YOUR art. Because like in real jobs everybody's responsible for his/her money and you have to negotiate your terms and the money yourself. Nobody will hold your hand

While the majority of the people reacted very positively towards the tips & tricks I shared, there were also some very hostile reactions that ideas like that would encourage you to be something you're not.
I'd like to elaborate on that.
First of all, these tips are basically science.
I didn't just randomly think them up. Most of the points are things that have been proven through marketing- and usability research. This whole marketing thing, however, is a field many artists are for some reason unfamiliar with, so people don't take it into account when wondering why they don't get the exposure they think they deserve. They often undeserving think it's their art that sucks, and that's a shame.
The reason I post this stuff, is mainly because I want people to know.
What you do with it, is

Failure? Rejection? Boredom? Not being good enough for something or someone?
I'm starting to notice in my own life that fear is usually a good indicator of where I have the greatest opportunity.
I'm not talking about fear of running into freeway traffic. That's a healthy respect for the laws of physics.
I'm talking about those things that if you are still long enough to listen to your own heart, you hear it telling you what you really hope for.
And usually there is a voice right behind it telling you why you cant have it, and all of the reasons why.
This past year, I have made an effort to start listening to the first voice, and and not to the second.
As I have been practicing this, I have started to notice something that I missed for years...
That fear voice is actually covering up the simple fact that I just have to choose. And then choose again. And again.

understand a painting study dont just copyThis is purely an observation from my point of view but whenever i see a study or painting based on a masterpiece or a screen plate. The results are almost in every case very good.So this tells me that our ability to copy is quite good and its not really required to be a high level artist.Junior level to mid level ones can pull this off easily too. Everything you need to know is already in the image we are trying to copy so it becomes a recipe for us.More Like This
the important thing though is to not "copy" it but to understand it and deconstruct a work method from it.And if you understand that then the work based from your own mind will be alot better.
When i see this kind of work , for me its not the level of detail and accurcy that one puts in the copied artwork that impresses me, but the images based on that learned knowledge afterwards. And to tell you the truth not many people understand this knowledge or are aware of how important it is to understand it.But the interesting phenomenon is that

Hey guys! This is more or less taken from my personal journal, and I'd love to hear your comments on my thoughts. What is your approach? What do you think?
"I want to get better at drawing. There are a few major flaws in this, I will try to get the next drawing correct. No, this drawing is perfect, it is identical to the reference picture. "
I rarely use the terms right and wrong, and even less the terms correct and flawed. For me, it's more about the process, the context and the thoughts, rather than the result.
I guess you can switch the word drawing with whatever. Be it painting or other artistic process, studying or working, just think about it. I want to get conscious about everything I'm doing and why. Isn't that what we should do in this life, to be conscious?
Especially here on deviantArt I see a lot of realistic drawings, done in a seemingly automatic way of training themselves to get better. Drawings of people and animals done as realisticall

"Hello, I'm doing some research (not very scientific, I just need some opinions) on photo-realism and I'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind: "why not simply take a photograph or use a 3D program"?
That's a great question and a realist has to answer this for him or herself, If copying without change, construction and re-invention, be it form a photograph or from life, then the creative process is not addressed, in this case I agree there is a useless element about it, it becomes a fundamental exercise at best. There is nothing wrong with these exercises if it improves your knowledge and skills as a technician. But if your aim is only to draw like "a photo", I'm afraid you will never attain what "art" has to offer. Also I think too many photo-realists rely on technical eye candy alone, with no

If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.

Originally Ruby was suppose to be evil. Let's get that straight. She was suppose to be against EVERYONE and a very deadly person. Her original plans were to have dark red eyes, a very dark purple dress and to have evil powers. However, plans stated to change of her physical appearance. A few days after creating her I got rid of dark red eyes, that's how she got here name, Crimson The color of her eyes and since they were red I thought of a name that would match...Ruby and the name seemed a little evil at first but, I decided to shorten her name to Ruby. I made her skin lighter, so she would be close to the white side. I later removed her evilness and switched it to the EXACT opposite, she was now sweet. She also had such a kind heart now and loved everyone and everything. L
Intentions: Hatty and RubyNow that you know a little more about Ruby's earlier version, let's talk about the relationship of Hatty and Ruby. Originally, Ruby was to be in COMPLETE hatred of Hatty and so was Hatty. I planned on making Ruby so corrupt to the point where she actually tried to kill Hatty. Later after updating Ruby a little, Ruby was to just plain and simply hate Hatty. And he would still loathe her. Ruby was almost like any of Hatty's friends, wanting to get him back to normal. However, when one of my best friends, PrancerPie, met me...well I met her...anyway, when that happened, I would often say that Hatty liked her character Marine, you know like a crush. So I stated to say that to her and we would laugh about it. I wll not mention it but I'm putting it this way: I was sad at one point about something and she was there for me. But the last thing I'd ever DREAM of is her making a gift for me. That very image is still here to this day and that begun a new relationship to Ruby and Hatty's relation.More Like This

comment on it.
I will make sure I visit your page and comment on one of your deviations, giving it a constructive comment/critique.
one lucky deviant who participates in this project will get 100 points
Why am I doing this?
I'm trying to show to deviants a real value of good feedback. It's something we should all learn to appreciate, when the comments aren't just pure words like awesome, wow, good, cool...
Deviantart is a big community with many exposed/underexposed artists but all of us are the same when it comes to getting feedback. We all get good and bad.

I decided to give one lucky deviant a 3 month premium membership in the points equivalent.

I will give you 636 points (which is a 3 month premium membership value) and when you get it, you can buy your special friend a 3 month premium membership and you will get the same gift from deviantart.
So, that means two premium memberships, for you and your friend (:

When in contemplation of the eternal wellspring that is the deviantART project and how it has become the engine keeping my heart and mind on a full burn as I strive to be an upstanding member of the community as well as a helpful architect and eager participant in the conversation -- my thoughts inevitably settle upon my attempts to define my concept of Gratitude.

Inspiration ProjectThis is a revised version of the previous journalMore Like This
This is a series of articles featuring artists that you in the community find personally inspiring.
Its very simple to get involved, simply comment with the names of deviants who inspire you, but before that please read the rules.
Rules for submitting
3 suggestions per deviant
DO NOT use :dev: or mention as of their deviations so it is a surprise.
Write a short sentence about each artist and how they inspire you.
Example suggestion Layout
MaRx886 - Check out her gallery, no need to explain how she's so inspiring to me.
Typomonger - A master in calligraphy.
Slurpaza - One of my favourite customizers here on dA!
Shout-Out ProjectThe "inspiration" idea has been somewhat altered.More Like This
Is there a deviant that means a lot to you, someone who inspires you or is a great friend you can rely on? Were you never really sure of how to say "thank you" for what they do/have done for you?
Why not give them a shout-out?
Post a heart-felt journal (something much more in-depth than a regular feature) dedicated to them, stating what you are thankful for (or how they helped you, how much they inspire you, or just how they're an all-around amazing person), and maybe include some of their work or what they do in the community. The journal can summarize all that is awesome about them. If you have a few deviants in mind and wanted to include them in the same journal, that is perfectly fine. And please don't feel pressured to be too personal; just write what you feel comfortable with.
If you'd like to get involved but wish to remain anonymous, I will gladly take notes and post journals with what you would like

Six of us went to Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest earlier this year, a day after my birthday in fact, and the trip went down rather well. However, this time we've shuffled things around a bit.
Four of the people who went last time will be reprising their roles in this upcoming holiday but we have invited two other people along. Hopefully there shall be an equal balance of girls and guys - a 3:3 ratio is good. This allows the girls to do girl things while the guys do... probably more girly things than the girls, knowing my friends.

Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world

People who comment and hypothesize about everything I do, even when I am not doing anything. People who make their own comics, websites, and blogs because of me. People who meticulously sift through my stats, my comments, and near-decade old journals. People who obsessively screen-capture everything I say or do anywhere online. History Repeats ItselfLast week a Connecticut action group going by the name of SouthingtonSOS held a video game burning event where local citizens were encouraged to bring various forms of violent media to be burned in a dumpster, no doubt a reaction to the recent Connecticut shooting.More Like This
I wish I could say I am surprised about this, but sadly the whole media frenzy surrounding violence in video games and movies reminds me of something that already happened once and profoundly affected the media it was accusing: Comic books.
During the early days of comic books, things occasionally got a little risqué. EC Horror comics in particular delighted in rendering extremely gruesome images and disturbing themes in their comics, which were being sold to children unbeknownst to their parents (because naive parents at the time had no reason to suspect comics might contain "inappropriate" material). However all that changed in 1954.
German-American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was upset about how disturbing some of those
Artist Intent vs Fan CriticismsThis has been a subject I've been interested in for years, and one which I personally struggle with on a near constant basis: Artist's intent versus fan criticisms. Before we begin I just want to make this clear that this journal is NOT about "ignoring criticisms" or any sort of endorsement of such an action. I'm gonna be accused of it, of course, but I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.More Like This
As I've been observing fan interactions over the years I've noticed a severe increase in a sense of entitlement: IE: that if you love something enough you have a "right" to force the creators to change their content to suit your personal preferences. We saw this play out to the extremes this past summer with the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, and we see it play out to a much lesser extent here on DA quite a bit.
Artists need feedback and criticisms to grow and improve their work, but at what point does it move beyond offering suggestions to help an artist improve to outright de

Deviant and Art MentionsMentions: Connecting PeopleMore Like This
Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.

So I noticed that many people did not get the chance to go for the interview session. I myself might have missed a bit at the end, but this is what I've got down as a transcript. Also, I've noticed we had MANY things in common O.o like with drinking milk in China
Hope you like it! ^^ Oh also, I missed the first question, but seeing the answer to it, I believe it was about childhood and art classes etc..
when I was little, they would send me to art classes, along with calligraphy, and ballet because it's one of those "my kid must be able to do everything"
they actually wanted me to become a doctor or lawyer or anything that makes a lot of money
it's very stereotypical of Asian parents, unfortunately...
~RefinneJenniferr asks "How do you make your strokes so efficient and straight-looking rather than thin and sketchy?" and *Eemari asks "How did you learn to use colors?"
hmm... I'm not sure what you mean? I always thought my style was pretty sketchy
Your art is worth more than you think. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a person in possession of a good fortune must be in want of art.More Like This
If you've ever taken a look at the job-offers part of any forum or site, you'll notice two tendencies that occur online. The first is that a lot of people look for art, some for the cheapest possible price at the best possible quality. The other is that a lot of people are willing to low-ball even more than the initial offer simply to snag the job.
Because if they don't offer cheaper art than the rest, they wouldn't be getting the job, or so the line of thought most likely goes.
You see people selling full-body, detailed renderings for $10, or people who sell pixel art for 50 points. But why?
A reminder should be sent out telling people that their art is worth so much more than they think. And this is why I can highly advise these journals if you plan to price and sell your art.

Five Tips to Starting FreelancingSo, you're tired of being unemployed. You've been stuck at home for the umpteenth month in a row, a new season of The Legend of Korra is still a year off, and your government support checks (should you be lucky to still be getting them) won't even come close to affording you a bus ticket to Everfree Northwest. Your evaluation of life is the same dissertation of tedium and monotony as Helen Keller's review of Chinese Democracy.More Like This
You know, pretty much on par with every other review of Chinese Democracy.
But know what? If you can't find a job, you'll make a job! Screw finding work, and screw the employers who keep dismissing your applications for being "over qualified" like that Bachelors of Science in Graphic Design is as detrimental to your character as being a registered felon. Screw them and that stupid help wanted sign at Quiznos. Now you're freelancing, baby.

suicide is never the answer
never the right choice
do u realize ur actions might lead to terrible things
if ur thinking of suicide
dont hurt your family
your loved ones
dont hurt them by taking your own life
taking you away from them
remember there is always someone who loves you
who will do anything for you
so dont do that to them
whatever you are going through
you have to be strong
you have to pull through
and the ones that love you will help you with it
dont give up
we love you
