New Username Symbols: Extended ThoughtsTwo weeks ago, we released two new products – deviant and art Mentions and new username symbols. Gratefully, and as we'd hoped, many deviants are embracing these changes in exactly the ways we'd anticipated, and the ways we ourselves did over the past several months of testing. While some deviants embraced the changes, it's fair to say that others have felt surprise, curiosity, and maybe even shock. These feelings are totally normal, but for the large part, there's a hope present. A positive outlook. The first steps in a new era that makes the way for our goals in the future, and, at the same time, removes clutter and confusion that new deviants often experience.
As with any change, there are a handful of deviants that don't understand why we made the choices we did

FriendsThe reason for this journal is to celebrate the work of three wonderful people who mean a lot to me here on dA. Each one of them has not only an abundance of creative talent but also manage to make others feel good with their kindness and support. Without any one of them, my time on dA would not have been the same and for that I am truly grateful.More Like This
Another thing they have in common is that each of them is experiencing a block with either their creativity or their motivation. They are all quick to support others so let us return the favour and show them a bit of support.

Happy Birthday, DeviantART!Today is a great day for deviantArt. The community hits its 14th birthday! It quite changed a lot through all those years, but it's still a great place for me to hang out when life becomes hard or stressful on me. I want to celebrate it with all of you, so here is my deviantArt storyMore Like This
I first joined the community in April 2nd, 2006 as FrostedGhost. Wow! 8 years already! Back then, I was obsessed with Tim Burton's works, especially Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride (which still is my fav movie). I'm disappointed there isn't any drawings left about these in my gallery. Anyway. 2006 also marks the year when my best friend and I started working on our own graphic novel, Nekros Abyssus
Notice how crappy those drawings were back then XDD
As I was working on our graphic novel, I started to become more fond of deviantArt and the people hanging out there, and I met a whole bunch of

First of all, i am going to pause dArMC for a while or maybe cancel it completely. I thought having monthly challenges would be a good idea to try something new for the different categories, but seems like there isn't really interest in that. I know that the themes and picked categories might have not been the best choice for everyone, but if i would just go with the usual stuff, it wouldn't have been much of a challenge, right?
Winners of the last month are featured below in this journal.
Maybe i will think of something different or will do other kinds of monthly events. We will see. Meanwhile feel free to share any ideas you have regarding this. Imo having ongoing projects is always a good idea, but if you don't tell me what you like it's hard to come up with things.

Shading, shading, shading, shading, SHADING. It's easily one of the hardest things to pull off correctly in art. Heck, I remember a time not to long ago when I struggled with; I struggled with it so much in fact that I practically hid from it for the longest time. Don't worry, though: the cool thing about shading is that it's just like riding a bicycle: once you learn it, it becomes hardwired into your brain; you never forget how to do it. So, with those lovely thoughts in mind, let us begin!
Step 1: Find Your Light Source
What is a light source, you so nobly ask me? Well, it's exactly what it sounds like: it's the place where your light is coming from. Now, this "light source" can either be "

I don't know who I am as an artist. I don't know what I am good at. I don't know where art will lead me in my current state. Why? There are many reasons. But the biggest is because of how school treated the arts when I was growing up. You wanted to be an artist? Good, we will have an hour of Art next month then never again until you hit high school. Why? Because our funding sucks. High school taught me the bare basics that I should have learned in elementary. Why? Because the funding was there. You want to be an artist in university? Pay $375 dollars for a Saturday afternoon daycare session for a few months. You can't take the actually good classes. Why? Because the funding got cut. You see the issue her
Save 2D animation with Steampunk?A Disney animation pal, James Lopez, has brought together a group of killer Disney veterans to create a 2D short called 'Hullabaloo'. It's currently set up as a short but with your support & donations, they can make more shorts, expand it into a web-series, a TV show or even a full-length movie. Hullabaloo is set in a Steampunk universe, stars female protagonists and action galore. The good news is that they are about to reach their financial goal on Indiegogo, but if they EXCEED it, it means they can make a second (and third) short! Once you see the trailer his has up, I promise, you will be blown away! Its just like a good Disney film because its the same people making it- but this one is for them, not the mouse! Some folks have been wondering where I've been, because I haven't been on Skype or other chat services recently. The truth is I've been doing a lot of work getting my new webcomic (online graphic novel) series "Minions" ready for online publication. As it's currently a one-man job, I am trying to make sure I "do it right" so to speak. As of today, we've updated the way Profile pageviews are counted for deviants and Groups.
Many years ago, we expanded the pageview counter to include not just the front page of your Profile, but also the Journals tab and the Prints tab (but not individual Journals or Prints). We mistakenly never expanded the count to other areas of the Profile.

Starting today, the pageview counter will begin including pageviews to all sections of your Profile, including:

I bet everyone's wondering where the stuff I owe is, but don't worry!! I have been working on them. In fact, I am going to be posting a 'picture dump' with a lot of completed art trades very soon. Why? A lot of the pictures are half-bodies or head-shots (since I give what I am given) so therefore I don't wanna spam inboxes with a bunch of partial-pictures, so I'll be uploading several trades in one large picture.
The reasons this takes me so long to do is because I don't draw on my laptop anymore. It refuses to communicate with the tablet driver now and I've done EVERYTHING possible to attempt and fix it. Unfortunately the new tablet I got on Christmas is malfunctioning so I have to work with my old one. Fan Fiction On deviantARTGalleries MonthMore Like This
What Is Fan Fiction?
Everyday, we are inspired by movies, television, novels, and other forms of media. They engage our minds with a variety of stories and characters, their plights and triumphs, their everyday minutiae. Fan fiction authors are so enamored with these other worlds and their inhabitants that they must partake in the stories which have brought them so much enjoyment. They expand on the current universe, explain gaps in the narrative and delve into characters' motivations.
A good fan fiction (or fanfic) is more than simple borrowing another writer's characters and universe. The fan fiction author must immerse his or her readers in the story, make them believe it is a natural extension of the source material. Characters have their own mannerisms and quirks; each universe has its own history and rules that need to be followed. The fan fiction author must master the nuances of those characters and the world they inhabit (unless purposely writi

the fact it was all written in english. With my buddy´s encouraging words and reading the Harry Potter books for a "basic reading-understanding", it was time to take this step and it totally changed my life to be honest.
Yeah pretty often like an addict I spent hours, days, weeks, months and now almost 7 years sharing my arts, interests and funny situations with many other deviants here. Some became quite close friends - so far an internet-based interaction is allowed for sure.

My deviantArt StoryI originally discovered dA by accident and in the early days I was just a lurker here! Then I noticed the wide range of art that was on offer here and I thought about joining and contributing pics of my beautiful country and the nature within. I wasn't into photography in a big way but I got a snapshot camera for Christmas one year and decided to have a bit of fun. I started taking and posting shots and was amazed that other deviants here actually liked them. This grew into a full blown passion and the rest is history so to speak! I've met some incredible artists here - not only amazing with their works but amazing people as well! Late birthday feature for my July friendsSorry girls... I'm so sorry... At first I was busy with voluntary work, and then I came back to dA being cursed, no picture appeared in journals properly, so I only left notes, because I didn't want to give a totally messed-up journal as a gift, it's just way less than that you deserve. And then came the eye surgery and I was unable to check whether this disability was corrected. Luckily now it is. So as I usually do my birthday features, I'll feature you, in order of birthdays and sorry for being late again!More Like This

Shady contest.Hi everyone. I recently posted a comment on a Notice which appeared in my inbox promoting a LINE Webtoons competition. This comment explained, in so many words, some stand-outs from the rather questionable Terms of Service, and I've decided to do a full run-down of them that I can offer a complete understanding of it to everyone. It is important to note first off that I do not have a law degree or any tertiary legal education, however I've researched, read, written, and signed enough legal and business contracts in my life to be able to decipher the meaning of one. And this one is a whole lot of shady.More Like This

I found this list of animation exercises on Tumblr, and I thought it would be a great way to practice animation, and just to improve my drawing in general since movement and liveliness is something I struggle with. They're fun to do as warm ups, or something quick when I don't know what to draw. Since they'll be simple and sketchy, I'll keep them on Tumblr rather than in my DA gallery, and I'll put them in here too so that they're all in one place. C:

So society and pressures aside, now I'm going to talk about what it's like diving into the industry.
First and foremost, get your shit done. So now you have a complete first chapter. I say that in one sentence but it would normally take a newb 2-5 months to finish a piece. One you will bring to the publishers and editors. Generally they want you to have 32 pages. <-- I'm not sure why but this is the standard. 16-32-48 are the norm.
It's very easy to get an appointment whether it be Shueisha or Kodansha etc. You can set up an appointment where an editor will look at your work. And it's simple, if they think it's sellable then they assign to you an editor. That editor will either make you rewrite your story or do a completely new one. You don't have to have it figured out til the ending but they at least want you to tell them where your plot is going. You are very lucky and talented if you reach

I learned a few things there that still haunt me. Like that there are no personal belongings. Anything physical, anything that had some kind of form you can grasp, can be taken away. And will be taken away. All it needed was a neighbor kid who pointed at one of my toys, telling my aunt it's theirs. And then it was theirs.
So, I learned early not to cling to materialistic possessions.
Years after having been able to leave that place, I still think the same way. Some patterns can't be deleted once they are not needed anymore. There are not many things in my home I couldn't replace easily. Some items would be missed more, some less. But all can be replaced without getting more of a reaction out of me but a "eh, happens."
Just not my ideas. The world in my head is mine and mine alone.

I know this is a little late, but it’s still an excellent read. This article that came out after the sorority murders in California a few months back details pretty succinctly the problem I and others have with how Nerd Culture treats women.
The article touches upon the narrative that a lot of nerds internalize, the idea that women are prizes to be “won” after a series of persistent attempts. The idea that jocks are dumb and nerds are smart, which is a concept even I bought into until fairly recently.
In fact, if I may, I would like to apologize for this strip from 2011: http://syacartoonist.com/things-i-will-never-understand and any others that I’ve done over the years that depict “jocks” as dumb brainless animals. First there were accusations of scamming, as the convention owners crowd-sourced $17,000 to secure the venue (which should’ve been done MONTHS in advance). All attempts to contact the hotel have resulted in the hotel saying there was no need to raise that money and that they never received any of it.
Then there were the cancelations. The Welcome to Nightvale people were flown in, but then told they weren’t going to be paid till AFTER they performed for everyone (which is already suspicious) and also told they weren’t getting reimberesed for the hotel, flight, food, etc. So sadly WTNV had to cancel at the last minute, resulting in the convention owners refunding patrons with “an extra hour in the ball pit.” The

For the first time in three years, I'm proud of being me and who I am.
And for the first time in several years, I'm very truly happy.
Going to China! It's been almost five years since I last visited my homeland, and I'm excited and scared at the same time.More Like This
My last visit in 2009 left me a bit traumatized but I think I'm okay now. My stepmother and half brother in China had tried to kill me with a kitchen knife. I was shaking and crying when I escaped in a taxi that night. After that event, I couldn't feel safe anymore. I changed my flight to return to the US sooner, and never wanted to go back again.
But that's in the past now. I miss my grandparents and other relatives. I miss the food, the cicadas, the unique mountainscape of Sichuan, and ever dwindling bits of the old city that's quickly being replaced by skyscrapers.
I'm looking forward to seeing how much China has changed. Though I'm not looking forward to breathing that air. Air pollution is such a constant health hazard that I had to buy hundreds of dollars worth of respirators for me and my grandparents. I will also be buying air purifiers (that's another five hundred dollars
MemoriesI've been in China for almost a week now, and all the memories I have of this place is flooding back. Unfortunately, many of those memories are quite negative. A lot of people commented on my last journal asking why my stepmom and half brother had tried to kill me. It's not a secret and I'm in a weird mood right now so I'll retell the story.More Like This
I last visited China almost five years ago. I was unfortunate enough to be stranded at the LAX airport for two days. During that time, I met another girl my age who was also returning to China to visit family. We talked for a long time and I found out her parents are also divorced like mine. She told me how her stepmom would regularly burn her with cigarette buds. I was horrified but I felt lucky that my stepmom is kind to me. I told her I was lucky to have a nice stepmom. I had never been so wrong.
When I first arrived, my stepmom greeted me kindly, and we talked, joked, and hung out like a regular family would. But her mask was quickly cracking a
The Deal with Flash SentryHis character may be undeveloped and he’s currently a tap-water love interest, if at all, but I like this fella.More Like This
Not a whole lot of you will agree with me. You guys may have seen the things I’ve done with this orange stallion, things I enjoyed doing. I didn’t step in to ruffle everyone’s opinion about him. They are yours to keep. But why do I enjoy developing the Flash Sentrycharacter? Especially with the pairing up to our dear Twilight?
It’s quite simple.
Some of you didn’t like Shining Armor when he first made his sudden appearance back at the end of the second season. But I saw promise in the big brother character and I spent post-season 2 developing him as the best BBBFF he could be through fanart. There wasn’t a lot of changed perceptions from this. After all, the show did stuff with Twilight, Cadance and Shining Armor canonically.
Shining Armor and Cadance is one of my fav

You may or may not have noticed I have gone a little quiet here on DA lately so thought I would give you a little update on the reason for my semi absence and why my inbox is full of new things to look at!
Firstly, just after Christmas I found out we can move house in a couple of months. Not only will we be moving house once this year but twice! (long story) Anyway, since then I have spent most of the time sorting out the entire house and there is so much more that needs to be done!
Secondly, my anxiety is pretty bad, I think I may suffer from SAD also which is making it a lot worse. I am low, don't really want to go out, do any of my hobbies, I am always tired and just have no energy for anything. Thinking about it I get it every year as I am just a completely different person in winter than in summer but never has it been so bad as it is now. Anxiety can make

Types of Mary-Sue'sAngsty Sue: This type of Sue is created for people to feel bad for because of some dark past. Every other character in the story (unless they're mean or spiteful) will always make the Sue’s angst the biggest issue in the story and the fact that she constantly dwells in her own self pity will be considered a “natural reaction”. If two characters both have traumatic experiences, the Sue will receive more attention no matter what. The main goal of these is often to have the OC cuddle with a canon character.More Like This
Example one: Fred has just had his leg chopped off and will die if he does not receive medical attention immediately, but Mary-Sue is crying because of her daddy issues so everyone is busy comforting her. When Fred tries to call attention to the fact that he’s dying, the others will call him selfish for not caring about Mary-Sue.
Example two: Best friends, Lucy and Mary-Sue were both kidnapped. Lucy was raped, and Mary-Sue witnessed it. W
I wanna thank everyone. The support and feedback I get when I post a new comic is ALWAYS a treat... but this time especially warmed my heart!More Like This
I worked tremendously hard on "Fun," and a lot of you knew that, and gave me an equally tremendous amount of love! I hope you know that really means something.
I read every single comment... but sometimes, there's too much to reply to... Please know that your love (or hate) never goes unnoticed. Ever!
So for those I haven't thanked for all your fantastic feedback, this is for you.
A special thanks, also, for those who feature my work and spread it around the Internet into other websites. I wouldn't have the fanbase I have if it weren't for your efforts to bring my work beyond deviantART. It's amazing! I LOVE YOU GUYS! SO MUCH!!
But alas... I won't be making any more comics.
In fact, I've actually been drifting from MLP, and I'm having a hard time enjoying FiM and the artwork I make for it, and--
HAAAAAAAaaaaaahhh, just kidding. :iconrainbowdashwinksp
