PE: Site Updates and How to Welcome ThemSite Updates and How to Welcome Them
This article was written due to the recent uproar from some groups of the community because of the new username symbols.
Change is something handled differently by everyone. Some people accustom to change very quickly, others may take a long time or may not adjust to change at all. In regards to deviantART Site Updates, it's important to know ways to welcome change and embrace it. You are not expected to love every feature that is released, but giving it a chance before bashing it is a right step forward.
Before reading on, please note that this article is not directed at any one individual, but as a community as a whole. All views expressed in this article are mine and mine alone and do not reflect the views of deviantART.com.
When a new feature is released, most deviants give their first impressions of said feature. Some may even react like this:

Support Vader, the pet fox wrongfully euthanizedHello friends and fans, today I come to you with heartbreaking news. Vader was a pet fox who I followed closely in the exotic pet community and on Tumblr. His owners were Tara and Eric, and they run a blog ( http://maythefoxbewithyou.tumblr.com ) all about their adventures raising a fox. Vader was an incredibly sweet, friendly animal who was specifically bred to live as a companion. He wasn't a wild animal. He wagged his tail to greet people and even got along swimmingly with other dogs and lived alongside a chihuahua named Athena. This was not a vicious animal.More Like This
Tara has received untold amounts of anonymous hate from social justice warriors and animal rights activists. People claiming her fox was some abomination and should be released, despite the fact that if she released Vader into the wild he would die either from starvation or from approaching the wrong humans and

That was a joke.
Your story must center around the development of a relationship between two entities.
Some things to consider:What kind of relationship is it? (No, "relationship" doesn't have to mean "romance.")Who/what is it between? Is the development positive/negative?
The relationship must be noticeably changed at the end.Distance/death don't count if they're still besties or whatever.I don't mean changed personalities. I mean a changed relationship.

These messages are designed to help engagement between deviants, as well as to help further conversation on deviantART, making it easier than before to

This week+ is one of the heavily emotional ones. Last Monday was the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, in which we commemorate the (over) 6 millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Today we observe the Day of Remembrance for Israeli Fallen Soldiers, which is dedicated to remembering the Israeli soldiers who fell during the many wars we've had since before the actual Declaration of Independence and during their service, as well as the victims of the terror attacks, in Israel and abroad. Tomorrow we'll celebrate our Independence Day.

How to 'Proofread' your ArtCommunity WeekMore Like This
Ever feel like there's something wrong with your art, but you just can't identify what?
Here are some surprisingly simple tricks that you should do throughout painting that will help you easily 'proof read' your art for mistakes and issues:
Check your values
If you're painting a picture in colour, this technique is really helpful. Values are important in a painting to give a 3-D feel and to make the painting not feel flat. 'Value' is how light or dark a colour is. It's often hard to tell the value of a colour as colours can easily trick your eyes into thinking they're lighter or darker than they actually are.
For example, take a look at these two colours:
Which is darker? The blue probably appears to be. However, when we make the image greyscale (take away the colours), you'll see that the values of the colours are almost identical.
Oh noes! How do I prevent myself from being tricked? Check your

Being happy with your artI've noticed lately, that there's this emotion that leaves people overwhelmed with the massive amount of good art in the community, thinking that they can never become as good or popular as those others. So sad, because skill or popularity in itself shouldn't be the major goal of an art community. I think many people who start out here get so overwhelmed that they forget what it's actually about.More Like This

To become madly popular -- a community icon.

In the game it is said that the mood will wipe off the face off of the earth, but since it was moving slowly I doubt it would cause that to happen... The time total is 72 hours, but the speed to day-to-night in the game is kinda fast; no one notices the moon about to crash until the Final day arrives. And once the moon crashes, everything else dies while Link is the last one, watching... Watching the terror and destruction that's happening, and then he was blown away; finally dying. How to become better at art? How to gain necessary skill and how to stay motivated and inspired?
There are no right, or wrong answers to these questions, as we all are different and we have our own creative journeys - but here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
1. Make art with your heart
Make the art that you enjoy to create. Make what resonates with you, put your heart in it (not literally) and it will show through your artworks.
2. Be consistent
Commit to yourself. Do something daily, even if it's just a sketch. Perhaps, do a study every morning or make speedpaintings. You may not see the progress at first, but you shouldn't get discouraged by that. Not every single one of your artworks has to be a masterpiece and it's totally okay to have a bad drawing every once
Commission TipsThe past few weeks, I've been getting quite a few notes regarding commissions: pricing, how to get people to commission you, quality expected, etc. After reading through and replying to them all, I've decided to write a news article for anyone to refer to. Here are some of my tips on maintaining a fairly steady commissions business. I hope they help!More Like This
(1) First off, the most commonly questioned topic is: pricing.
Now, for those who take point commissions, it's necessary to realize the value of points. So for starters, lets calculate how many dollars one point is worth. Knowing that$1.00 = 80 ...you can then derive that a point is worth $0.0125, or 1.25 cents. And since there is no such thing as a quarter cent, we round down. A point is the approximate equivalent of a penny.
Now taking that into consideration, think. How much are your commissions? I've seen lots of artists around dA who sell their art for 1-50 points. One to fifty points. That's from a penny
Tips on How To Get CommissionsWhen offering commissions, it can be very hard to get yourself noticed, what with the hundreds of thousands of other artists out there. People gripe about how pageviews aren’t important, but they are a helpful tool for you to see what kind of traffic flow you’re attracting. The more views you get, the more of a chance there is that one of those viewers is interested in commissioning you.More Like This
Gigonomics is a term I heard about a few months ago at an FLBA conference. After Googling it, many people seem to be using it in a slightly different way, but I was particularly intrigued by the way it was used by the keynote speaker, who was also a comedian. I can’t remember his name, but I probably will after I post this…
Basically he said that he takes any gig he can get, because you never know who could be in the audience. That was how he was asked to come to our conference. I realized that this can apply here on DeviantArt as well.
The way to get yourself noticed is to do a

I can't do anything other than honestly admitting that I'm not that good at art. I'm not some awesomely skilled concept artist, at least. I've seen many people do a better job while receiving a lot less of attention.
Why a medium like DeviantArt works for me? Probably because I've been around on the internet for so long, and I've spend so much time working for internet-marketing company's, that things like advertising and web usability have become a second nature to me. A lot of the things that I've come to regard as common sense in internet communication, are things that are nowadays proven successful by research.
It's important to know that websites like DeviantArt are listed in the category social media. That probably didn't occur to most people, since DeviantArt seems to be so heavily focused towards art (and tradi

Hello. This is iDJPanda on the topic of shading!
When I usually start into the shading process of something, I always struggle to see which kind of technique I can use to give the piece of art the type of wow that I want. But just like anything, there are MANY ways to do it! This can help you use different shading techniques for different textures. I'm gonna give you a few different ways you can shade (Try to shake it up! ). If you have any other ways you shade, please feel free to tell me!
One of my favorite, in this technique of shading, you go against what all elementary teachers told you. You scribble! When you shade like this, you'll come out with something that looks like this.
Using circular motions, you generate different shades. Spending more time, swirling makes the certain areas you want darker, and the less you swirl makes the other areas lighter.
The Artist's Toolbox - Working with ReferencesThe Artist's Toolbox - Working with ReferencesMore Like This
I can draw anything... as long as I get to look at it.
There is a great myth that drawing is a memory exercise. That if you can draw entirely from memory it makes you a better artist who deserves more kudos.
Of course the study of drawing will lead to a good memory of the things you've already studied how to draw, humans, animals, whatever it is that you love to draw. But the downfall of this is that you can restrict yourself to only drawing what it is you have studied how to draw, ie what you've memorised.
Using reference is not a weakness! It is a strength and almost all top level artists use a lot of reference. Using reference means you're not trapped one person's life experiences and can draw upon a wealth of extra knowledge. How can that be a weakness?
A lot of people seem to assume that the reference should come first. They go out and they scour the dA stock etc to find th

But those two letters can be a challenge for all on deviantART sometimes. For this dArp article i will not focus on art but collected the articles and explanations of other people.
Also known as Daily Deviation. It is a daily feature given since the beginning of deviantART to showcase a few selected pieces. For 24 hours it will be seen at the footer or at the DD page. Afterwards it will vanish among the older DD pages. It will be forgotten instantly after those 24h and only gets a bit attention when CVs do their monthly DD feature again or when someone stumbles across them by accident.
Artworks featured as a DD can be easily recognized by that little red heart framed by a golden background below the actual deviation. It often comes together with comments like "Congratulations for the DD".
DDs can not be a journal, a WIP or any artwork located at the 'Scraps' category.

How To Enjoy Life On DeviantArtCommunity WeekMore Like This
There have been many articles written about this subject, but my article today touches on something a bit different: communication and its difficulties, and how to overcome them.
DA is like a class full of foreign people
It's as simple as that: DeviantArt is a mixture of cultures (which is a beautiful thing). However, we always tend to fall in the habit of considering everyone similar to us, or coming from our same background and culture: that's because in real life, most of the people around us and most of our friends are exactly that. We share with them a hometown, school courses, workplace, a "history" - and we can see them: just their facial features can tell us about their heritage and about things that maybe we could or should avoid saying or joking about. But on DA, very often, the only thing we share with people who become our watchers, or deviants that we interact with in the forums or groups, is
White Knights and Why They're HarmfulThis is quite a huge/concerning topic, and I know that not all deviants share the same point of view, and I respect that. Hope it helps some.More Like This
So, for the past year or so I've noticed that some people saying that they specifically dislike a lot of "popular" dA artists due to the overprotective behavior of their watchers.
I personally find it very sad that people are turned off by my artwork simply because they associate my username with "[my] white knights".
There's no way I can possibly control what my fanbase does or says, and this can lead to some very awkward situations and conflicts on my end.
Don't get me wrong...I love each and every one of my watchers, in fact without you guys my artistic life would be incredibly more lackluster. I'm sure ma
Activity vs. Community When combining millions of artists working with different media, style, experience level, etc. being here can become overwhelming and finding your "place" can seem almost impossible. Why should we bother writing journals and articles featuring art? It takes time and effort but is it really worth it? Do people read and look through our features?
I'll try to explore some of these questions in my today's article and I'd like you to write your experience and opinions as well!
Reasons to feature
"Why bother" is a question that a proud community member never asks himself. First of all, DeviantArt is a place of inspiration filled with pictures, rarely a person gets by without browsing art and eventually "faving" them. Some people focus entirely on collecting artworks into their Favorites folders - this action and displaying artworks in your journal or a poll brings me to the first reason, supporting the artist. Further than that, it starts a dialogue between you and the featured artist (either via Mentions or by letting them know about the feature yourself).
PE: Creating art on CommissionPE: Creating art on CommissionMore Like This
At some point in your career as an artist, you'll be asked to create artwork on commission. Whilst it's a wonderful feeling, being able to make money creating art, it's completely different than selling a personal piece you previously completed - accepting a commission means entering a temporary relationship with your client. As simple it may sounds, there's a lot to satisfying customer's needs, sometimes the best you can do is to say no. Being picky regarding which commission you accept is not a bad thing, but try not to automatically turn down commission because it seems to be violating your artistic integrity, it's hard to survive without paid jobs.

As of writing, deviantART provides some APIs which third party developers can use in applications. This allows people to create applications such as Pickley's Sta.sh Client - applications that allow you to interact with deviantART away from the website itself, and even when away from your computer. A minimal OAuth2 API is exposed, which allows users to authorise applications with their accounts, which, in turn, allows applications to perform certain actions with your account.
The OAuth2 API could do with some changes, but is fine for the time being. Aside from OAuth2, deviantART provides an API for sta.sh, and some other basic APIs, which are documented on the developers page. While Sta.sh has a somewhat robust API, the rest of the website's features do

A New Way to Make SuggestionsHello Beta Testers!More Like This
For some time we've been running a limited test of the Ideas Forum on our Zendesk Help Desk integration. Today, we're expanding this test to our Beta Testers.
This forum allows for a great deal of flexibility in how we approach suggestions.
We can mark items that are planned, completed, or not planned at this time. We can also highlight staff responses on forums, giving more weight to responses that are important in informing deviants why we can, or cannot, take a suggestion into consideration at this time.
Deviants can vote on one anothers' posts, giving greater community control over what content is reviewed. The more votes, the higher the suggestion will appear in the forum! Unlike our current forum, threads don't expire, and when creating a new thread you'll be prompted with similar threads.
These are only a few of the features the new forum has, but altogether our testing has shown thus far that

Gather graphic references as well as information about the character's personality: is he bold or shy? What fashion style does he wear the most? Does he have a typical facial expression or pose?
There's a whole world behind each character, and a reason for each detail of his/her look and attitude. The same should be true for the fan art.
2. Use the power of composition
Composition is truly powerful. You can condense a great story into o

How to Draw Manga! Tips and Tricks: Action Scene Basics Introduction
Action scenes are a key part of any manga, whether they be a placid shoujo to a shounen mecha showdown. Action scenes are a dynamic action driven panel showing a fight or action against an inanimate object, or a passionate realisation. All of these follow a similar formula to create the action sequence.
Setting the Scene
When creating an action scene first consider the what action is being performed and how the two objects/subjects are interacting, i.e. show the force of the movement. For a person, it they are being hit, they will reaction in accordance to the force applied.A common way of achieving this is using the < shape to indicate where they are being hit. Take into consideration anatomy; if a person is being hit in the stomach they will produce a nice < shape with their head and shoulders coming forwards, whilst the hip becomes the poi
Character TheftGonna be completely honest here, in the past few months I have had several cases of character thefts or people being "heavily inspired" by my characters, and I am getting really sick and tired of it.More Like This
Being inspired is one thing, but taking my character and changing a few things isn't called being inspired. Especially when you search up the character's species and find none of the other characters having the same looks as mine.
For example, IF my character is a certain species like a werewolf or a basilisk etc etc, I understand that those species have specific criteria and design that makes them what they are. Like you can't put a lizard head on a humanoid body and call it a werewolf. BUT if you search the same species and find that none of the other 999999 art of them have the same look or same particular design element that my character has, but yet yours have because you saw and took the idea from me, then we have a fucking problem.
I even have cases where the other

Here are some tips from my experience about jumping from amateur to professional.
1. Make it happen
Nothing will come your way if you don't set the ground for it. In other words "don't wait for success to knock your door, smash his own door and get in (cit.)".
Don't waste time, keep on studying every single day and stay committed.

Set your long term goals: companies you'd like to work for, a self-project you want to release, a specified job you would do everyday (p.e. book covers, drawing comics, animate, concept designs, etc).

Heya People! Back Again! This article will be giving you some tips to take your boredom away and get motivated when you're hanging on DeviantArt. Here is what we'll go over:
How to Get MOTIVATED
A word of Thanx!
So we begin!
All Deviants, Staff, Seniors, and Community Volunteers are a part of this awesome, socially-artistic networking site where we can interact and help each other by critiquing, featuring, commenting, and collecting artwork or finding new artists by searching the cool, yet small, corners of the site. But with all this awesomeness, some or many of us are sometimes stuck in a situation where we become bored and shut our computers down or senselessly move our mouse pointer in a circular direction. To keep such events from occurring, and with such an amazing site in front of you, I'll be giving you some ti
To Share or Hide - That is the QuestionCommunity WeekMore Like This
If DeviantArt asked
Do you want to share this art?
on every submission, you'd probably frown as you clicked yes. Complaints on the feature would probably outnumber those over the removal of the webcams.
But the site actually does ask you that every time you submit something.
In order to explain, I'm first going to provide you a link to spyed's article on this matter.
"Well, this is great! This will help keep my art from being stolen!"
Actually, no. spyed explains quite well in that journal article why precisely it isn't the best idea to discourage sharing.
But I can understand why some people want to hide their deviations, and why they want to restrict them to those logged in to DeviantArt. With that in mind, because I know there are many people who do want to use this feature, and newer members may not be aware that it exists, I'm going to show you how to do this, both on new uploads and en
Tips on HOW TO BE A BETTER ARTIST.Sometimes I get a notes from you guys asking about tips to draw better. It's okay to ask if you're prepared to get respond that does not resolve all your problems ♥ Many of you ask about techniques, specific things to make your drawing work or just anatomy. I'm not at a place when I can teach you any of this. I'm still at my artistic journey and I'll be in it for the rest of my life. But I can still share with you some experience that I gained while travelling with my drawing. So here they are 8 core points to improve.More Like This
1. Don't try to find your style at first. When your hand isn't warmed up by tons of training and studies you'll only get frustrated. So just draw, regardless of style.
2. Try to understand anatomy. And when I say "try to understand" I mean fill thousands of pages with it. But only one theme at a time. It will be easier. So lets say today you'll be trying to understand an eye, second day work with ears.

Late in the evening, sun is setting over the mountain range just a few miles away. Neighborhood is quiet. The only sound was the paper in my hand as I looked to it, hand on my forehead. The paper was an explanation of my GPA from the previous semester of college, and I was told that I could not return. My life felt like it was falling apart. I walked down to the basement, and sat in an armchair, contemplating where my life was going to go, as it had seemingly been derailed from all plan, and it was my fault. All the friends I had made at the dorms, the adventures we had through 2009, and that the likelihood I would ever see them again was slim to nothing.
At the same time, I knew the next few years of my life would change everything, and rather than wallow in self-pitty of what seemed to be my future as I knew it crumbling, I decided to take up something that had caught my attention during the s
