orld War I (1914-1918) was a human catastrophe that devastated Western civilization and mocked the hope inherent in “modernism”. The sheer volume of the war’s slaughter was beyond belief. The horror of it all destroyed the trust in science, medicine and technology as the golden gateway to a harmonious and peaceful future for humanity. All that was thought to be good had been twisted to the evil purpose of a global war. A global sense of hopefulness was replaced with a global sense of fear and loathing.

The Artist's Toolbox - Working with ReferencesThe Artist's Toolbox - Working with ReferencesMore Like This
I can draw anything... as long as I get to look at it.
There is a great myth that drawing is a memory exercise. That if you can draw entirely from memory it makes you a better artist who deserves more kudos.
Of course the study of drawing will lead to a good memory of the things you've already studied how to draw, humans, animals, whatever it is that you love to draw. But the downfall of this is that you can restrict yourself to only drawing what it is you have studied how to draw, ie what you've memorised.
Using reference is not a weakness! It is a strength and almost all top level artists use a lot of reference. Using reference means you're not trapped one person's life experiences and can draw upon a wealth of extra knowledge. How can that be a weakness?
A lot of people seem to assume that the reference should come first. They go out and they scour the dA stock etc to find th

Our lives go by so fast and the time for what we really want to do is limited. So, how to wisely value our time, how to make the best of every single day and keep on creating?
Here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
Sort what are the most important things you need to do as soon as possible and start with that. Make a list with what needs to be done and sort them by how necessary it is to do them, how much time it will aproximately take and how the result could impact your life. We have to make constant sacrifices in order to achieve our goals - instead of watching that useless youtube video, instead of checking e-mail and social media sites all the time, instead of whining that there is no time, but actually using what we have - everyone of us have 24h in a day, the difference between
Art and perfectionismDear, deviantart fellow artistsMore Like This
Perfectionism can be a good and a bad thing at the same time. We strive for it, but sometimes the result doesn't exceed our expectations. And that's okay.
Not every single artwork you make has to be a masterpiece. Make some sketches, speedpaints, studies - just do something. See your flaws, be aware of them - and work on them. Don't put yourself down with negativity. It never helps. It takes time to learn, to gain new skills and make art. Through many hours of work we achieve what we want. And it takes time.
It's so easy to give up. To think - what's the point in doing this, if the artwork is never perfect. Art doesn't have to be always perfect, it has to be made. We have to get used to the fact that we'll never be good enough - there is a beauty in that, because we have something to strive for, to experience and observe.
Making art is difficult and yet it's fun. En
Conquer your artblockI think every artist out here has experienced it at least one time in their career: the so called artblock. A moment of total lack of inspiration that suddenly hits you, and leaves you unable to create. Most often the solution is to just wait. Most artblocks will solve automatically with time. But there are circumstances in which an artblock doesn't automatically disappear, or when you have deadlines to catch. In that case, you might be helped by some basic tips to conquer your artblock.More Like This
Over the years, I've experienced an artblock (or writersblock, as they call it for fiction writers) many, many times. Most of them were short, but the longest lasted over 2 years. Most of them solved on their own. But sometimes I just needed that little bit of extra help. Therefore, I made a list with a few tips and tricks to make your artblock go away. Hopefully it'll help you as well as it did me.
Beat your fear
Most artblocks come from fear. The fear of not being able to
Being happy with your artI've noticed lately, that there's this emotion that leaves people overwhelmed with the massive amount of good art in the community, thinking that they can never become as good or popular as those others. So sad, because skill or popularity in itself shouldn't be the major goal of an art community. I think many people who start out here get so overwhelmed that they forget what it's actually about.More Like This
Many people out here, sign up to DeviantArt (or any internet art community) in order to publish their work on the internet. They've probably looked around for a while already. They saw those amazing artists that had millions of pageviews, and secretly hoped that by putting their art on the internet, they would be able to do the same. To become madly popular -- a community icon.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble; but it's probably not gonna happen. And if it's gonna happen; it's not going to be soon.

Inspiration is such an important subject for every artist. When we have it - we feel amazing and full of creative energy, but when we lack it, we tend to be anxious and procrastinate on things we really like to do.
So here are some of my thoughts about the topic and I hope that they might be helpful.
1. Go outside
We tend to spend way too much time indoors. Try to do some plein-air painting/drawing. Explore the world around you - It's not only good for your health, but It's also a great way to get inspired by nature, people in streets, clouds and sunsets etc.
2. Gather pictures in inspiration folder
If you see some amazing art, photography - save it on your computer. Or fave it in dA, or collect in your tumblr/pinterest board. Look at that folder every once in a while. If you see some really advanced and cool art
EncouragementWhen I started out on DeviantArt, I used to be one of those artists that thought I could never do art properly.More Like This
I'll start saying that I spend most of my childhood getting only little encouragement.
My parents were, like many other parents, convinced that art wasn't that much of a useful skill since it's nearly impossible to earn money with -- and would've liked it if I spend my time doing something more useful instead. At school I was that pathetic kid without friends. Creative, yet very introverted. The one that gets bullied in the schoolyard. Needless to say; it was rare to find people saying something nice about me, and it was even more rare to find someone actually encouraging me.
Back then, I used to believe that I was alone. I initially signed up to DeviantArt to find people with similar interests. But it happened to change my mind along the way. When I came into contact with other artists, I came to realize that there were in fact many people just like me. People th

stop wishing, start doing
As usual I had no idea what would be the topic of this journal, but I managed to think about and write down these 5 reasons why we (and I) tend to fail on things we want/have to do and I hope you'll find this journal post helpful.
1. Time management issues.
"I have no time for this", "If only I had the time for that" .. we tend to make these excuses, as if we all wouldn't have the same amount of time every single day. It's how we manage to spend that time, that matters. A lot of us have other important things to do, but let's be honest, if you have the dedication there are really no obstacles in your way. There will never be the perfect time for anything and with proper planning It's easier set the priorities for the right things.
They are everywhere. Especially on the internet. We tend to waste so many hours on checking what's new, reading bl
Comfort zoneDear, deviantart fellow artists,More Like This
It's 10th post of my journal post series.
Every now and then and certain point you'll be in your comfort zone. It's easy to stay there, be repetitive and doing what you now how to do is indeed compelling. But, what about the improvement?
If we stay in one place - in one certain way of doing things - we just stay in the same place and in the same skill level. We can't learn anything new if we don't want to, if we are afraid to step outside the comfort zone, where everything is easy and wonderful.
So, how to overcome that fear of failure, of not being succesful and of difficulties and improve faster?
By variety - experimentation and exploration.
Try new techniques - different ways to express your creativity. Whether it's the medium - traditional (watercolor, pencil, ballpoint pen, oils etc.) or digital. The materials - canvas, papers,
A bit about social mediaThis video has been a hype on the internet over the past view days;More Like This
It's not the first time a similar message is send, and it's probably not the last time.
Over the years, I've seen many of those messages seen popping up on (how ironically) social media. And while the intention is good, I think the whole "quit social media" thing in general is a bit too one-sided. They don't realize that social media isn't just something we can stop over a day. It has become a collective mindset. A communication standard. Like phone calls and letters used to be our main form of communication in the 90's, social media now has become our standard for communication.
The matter is the same. It's just the medium that shifted.
I didn't have a Facebook account until late 2011, and I didn't have a smartphone until early 2012 (and that was only because my boss got me a new phone, and it happened to be smart). Yes, I was late. The reason for that? I absolutely hated the smartphone generation!

Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way, no rigid process you must adhere to, no shoulds or shouldn'ts except those you designate for yourself. This is one of the fun parts of being an artist, really - have a heady good time with it.
- Be patient.
A design is something gradually arrived at. It takes time and iteration and revision. You'll throw a lot of stuff away, and you'll i
The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.1 I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. So, this is part 1 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (www.taughbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concentrate on drawing instruction for all forms of media. In light of the absolutely horrendous commission page DA started up which encourages artists to sell their work for literally pennies, let me talk about pricing artwork. Or more specifically, how I price my work.
This...guide? Advice? Thing? Highlights what I've learned about pricing throughout the last few years. I do not touch on the subject of beginner pricing, simply because there are no set guidelines for that and beginner pricing usually ends up being extremely subjective. This guide assumes that the reader is somewhat experienced in their craft and is looking for pointers on pricing. However I still highly encourage beginners to read! This is what pricing should be like, not mere pennies for hours upon hours of work. This also focuses on crafts and sewing but a lot of it is s

My skin was not always baby-smooth. Throughout my teenage years I had what is known as cystic acne. Life was depressing. I can't say which kind of acne is worse, all-over surface type, or one single giant zit-from-hell in the middle of your forehead. I had the second kind. I was extremely self-concious, and I wouldn't have dared to take stock photos had I not found a way to clear up my skin. Day-to-day, I took my stress out by picking at my skin. You can't see it in my photos now, but I do have some permanent damage from skin-picking. It's a reminder that self-harm is self-harm. You don't have to be taking a razorblade to you

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;

As I am from Poland, I work mostly for Polish publishing houses but I do draw for other companies too. Some things might not work out as I say, since every company has different politics. For example: Polish publishing houses are not very fond of people with an Artist degree. Same in software companies which also hire computer graphics. They don't like artists with diplomas because they "always know better" and it's very hard to work with them. It might be different in other countries, where educated artists has a different image in society. I personally believe that degree
DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?I wanted to share this post I've seen on Tumblr. As a professionnal artist, I already know that I underprice my commissions. When you are a freelance, a drawing is generally 500€ to 1000€ when you're a beginner. On DA, I generally sell them at 30/50€. What to think about the new commission system, knowing that I'm already leaving my commissions for a low price?More Like This
You can easily understand: why do you open commissions then?
Well,I love drawing for other people, and most of commissionners don't even know the real price of a drawing (now you know!). But when I open commissions, this is because I've got the time, because I love to share with commissionners, to know their universe, OCs...and because it helps me to buy new fabric for reenactments too, for sure. But... Well... Shame on you DA! O_o
How can you sell a service for only 0.2/0.4$, knowing that DA takes 20% too?! O_o
It may be a good news for commissionners, but DA, you're killing the artists by making people think that a drawing cos

Recently he spoke out in favor of Zoe Quinn, creator of Depression Quest, who was herself under fire from internet thought police for “corrupting” games journalism’s integrity by sleeping with journalists to get favorable reviews of her game (allegations which later proved to be untrue). Because he spoke out in favor of Zoe Quinn, Phil found himself under a massive internet attack, wherein hackers compromised his SSI, passwords, Polytron's PayPal account, and other sensitive data.

Correction GuidelinesHere are some suggestions for corrections. (Last updated 6/29/2014 by ninebark)More Like This
To redline means to re-outline the art to point out mistakes or suggest improvements. This technique is a big help for artists who know that something's not quite right with their drawings, but aren't sure what it is.
If you'd like to do a correction, but you're not sure where the mistakes are, have a look at similar drawings or photos. It might help you grow as an artist too!
When you redline a colored drawing, reduce the transparency and saturation of the original drawing to make your lines more visible. Your lines don't have to have "outline-quality", but they should be at least clean enough to see where your lines go.
It is not necessary to correct the whole drawing, especially in cases where there's a lot of stuff happening in the picture. You can focus on what you think would be mos

The theme for this contest will be "Remember Me". We leave it up to you, the artists, to decide what this phrase means to you! There are several different approaches you can take, but if you're stuck, here are a couple ideas you might consider:
-A portrait so outrageous or bizarre it cannot be forgotten
-A sentimental portrait of someone you'd like to be remembered
Now remeber, as we are the Portrait Club, the entries must be portraits! However, you can submit portraits of any medium (except literature)! Whether you're a photographer, a traditional artist, or a digital artist, we welcome you to submit to our contest! Please read on though for the rules!

I'm also a computer engineer, but that's not the sexiest part of me. I also have two arms, which I use to do awesome karate moves, and I have amazing sorcery skills, such as turning water into a transparent liquid and summoning pizza.
When and why did you join Deviant Art?

A person I knew started into photography and, well, I took a look around her deviantArt gallery and she was brilliant, so I said "what the hell, I bet I can do better, let's just sign up". Nowadays, I'm still hoping this will happen someday. Eventually.
What kind of art do you create? What art form would you call your “main art form”?
I started drawing comic books and writing, and later started making short films, which I still

Hai Hai lovely pleople!
I was thinking about a contest for a long time now and so I could finally manage to write it!
"It has been 3 years now...that I´ve entered the gates of the Kingdom of Whiluna...
Since then I´m living here like a princess, infecting people´s minds with my glory.
Psshhh! This madness continues...Come to me my friends, stick by my side and you´ll prevail in true fabulosity"
So it has been 3 years ago that I created this character(And it was sometime in August I think)
Your task will be to draw a picture of Rascal.I will give you total freedom, you can portray him however you want!
This can even be an "anniversay" for Rascal, arriving to the land of Whiluna. (on deviantart I mean :"D)
