Photography Discussion: Photo-journalism rules?Last month we discussed when it was appropriate to stop taking photos - the general thoughts were mixed. A lot of you thought that photography at concerts, even if the concert organisers banned it, was completely reasonable. Others suggested that rules were made to be kept. All in all, an interesting response. Moving on with the discussion, this month we're looking at the boundaries with Photo-journalism and whether there actually are any in your eyes?
Do you think that when faced with a delicate situation - a polictical protest with multiple injured persons, war, natural disasters - or other scenarios where people are hurt, dying or dead - do you think that we should stop photographing? Or should the camera keep rolling in order to capture atrocities? Would you stop to help, rather than shoot? Would you stop shooting if an injured person begged you to?

- Ansel Adams
When photography was first created it was used primarily for portraits. It was not yet mobile and therefore could not yet be used in genres like landscape or journalism. Portrait painters at the time felt that photography was not legitimately artistic, and this spurred the "Pictorialist" photographic movement. In defense of their art, Pictorialists depicted subjects with soft visual effects and artistic poses. At the beginning of the twentieth century a man named Paul Strand countered the "Pictorialist" movement stating that it was too apologetic, and did not take advantage of the new medium.
Paul Strand was an American Modernist photographer leading the drive to establish photography as a valid form of fine art. However, he did not believe that all forms of photography held artistic value. His argument was based on the idea - central to modernist art, of 'trut

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser

The group :icontheCAMERaLUCIDA: is holding a contest!
It is going to be a conceptual photography contest and everyone can join. You don't have to be part of the group to participate but of course this would be nice I also want to point out that you don't have to be a "typical conceptual photographer" to join. You just have to take a photo including the contest's topic which means you actually realize a concept, no matter if it is more surreal, abstract, expressive and so on. If the concept is visible, you can only win
The topic will be announced soon but by now I want to know a few things:
VSCO Film UnearthedI've been receiving an influx of notes recently on how I edit my photographs, which I find very flattering that people find my editing style so curious. I must say though, and I mean this completely with honesty; a well exposed, and sharp photograph is the beginning of a nice photograph. It also makes editing so much more easier to do, as there's less fuss over trying to save the photo which only leads to over-editing... And by my experience, photographs don't look nearly as flattering when trying to fix the clarity etc. That being said, I do love editing, particularly making photoshop actions that make the whole post-processing simple and easy. If you would like to know more about my own personal photoshop actions, you can find them in my "Resources for you" gallery, and they are completely free to download.More Like This

I am Nelleke, and I was asked to write an article about forest photography. Which is my favorite subject of photography! There is something about them that is timeless. Of course there's a reason forests get used so much as a backdrop in stories and movies... They can give you the feeling something magical is waiting just around the corner.
In this article I will discuss several points, some a bit longer than others. They are Composition, Conditions, Equipment and Editing.
You might have seen a beautiful forest scene once, but noticed after taking a picture that it looks very different. A picture lacks the depth your eyes can see while walking in a forest. Which can result in a picture of just a flat bunch of trees.

Photojournalism Authenticity PhotojournalismMore Like This
Photojournalism has many sides to it the thing that seperates it out from other photographic areas is that it relies on both the photographer and the reporting to often ensure that something is factual, accurate and portrayed in the best possible way. One of the biggest problems, especially when we are surrounded by modern technology, editing programs and more is that it can often be diffcult to tell whether an image is authentic or not. There are some useful things available whether you are a journalist looking to certify an image's credibility or whether you are simply on DeviantArt wishing to suggest a Photojournalism piece for a Daily Deviation. Sometimes it's interesting to carry out that little bit of detective work!
On DeviantArt there have been some amazing journalistic pieces over the years and it has always been important to ensure that the person sharing the photography is the original shooter. There are quite a few tools out the

When you think "published [blank]" the first words that come to mind to fill that blank are probably "poet" or "novelist" or "hack". Right? After that the top of my list is family, then health and if I am content. You notice I didn't say happy, as this in the ying/yang world also implies period of unhappiness. I prefer to feel my efforts are giving me a peaceful sense of accomplishment.
Now I begin to think of money, but as I learned decades ago, you will never have as much as you want. Ask anyone, if they have enough, even Donald Trump, will think they need more. When I learned this, I stopped c

The terms "precious" and "semi-precious" can be very misleading, as they imply certain stones are more valuable than others, even when that's not the case. The distinction between the two terms was used to reflect a gem's rarity, quality and "beauty", and because there's simply no sure, objective way to tell which gems are "precious" and which aren't, you won't find them in this article.
So, I will simply talk of "gems" or "gemstones", or, if I'm feeling like this article needs some word diversity/really lazy, simply "stones".
*most commonly: diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald

The Block ToolI have been wanting to write an article on the topic of blocking for a while. Blocking is one of those tools that is unique to modern communication; you can block phone numbers, e-mail addresses and, on a lot of websites, specific users. So this is going to be a basic play through of: what is it? and what does it mean to be blocked? The "what is it" will cover the technical aspects; the "what does it mean" will cover the social implications.More Like This
What is the block tool?
The block tool is a tool that allows one deviant to keep another from watching them, commenting on their deviations/journals/personal forums/shout boxes/profiles and from favouriting deviations. If you block someone you also take away your own ability to interact with the other person's content; the dA block goes both ways.
For more info:
What does it mean if someone blocked me

Due to a few concerns that I'm overgeneralizing through my use of the word ignorant, I wanted to amend some things:
1. This journal was not written out of a pretentious attitude, in fact it's quite the opposite. I feel the need to share knowledge, and I do whenever I can. I could never be upset with those who truly do not know where to start when it comes to enriching their minds.
2. This journal is not about lording knowledge above those who do not yet possess it.
3. This journal is not about bashing someone for the barriers that can impede or prevent their desire or ability to absorb new information.
4. I do not encourage people to "just Google it," that is why resources are listed at the bottom.
5. If you would like to contribute a resource, please link it in your comments.
I’ve been hearing the phrase “I don’t know what ____ is” a lot as of late and it’s been a little irksome, and here’s why: we are currently living in
Sorry to bother you...Hello all,More Like This
I thought I'd take a moment today to write a journal which is probably long overdue. I believe there is a common misconception floating around that CVs are so busy, that when you send us DD Suggestions, or other messages, you are being a bother.
Quite regularly the DD Suggestions I receive start with something along the lines of "I am sorry to bother you..." or "I know you are busy but.."
I'd like to assure you all that no suggestions you send, or any other type of contact made with me (or any other CV for that matter) is something to feel sorry or bad about (unless you are legitimately harassing us or something).
I've often heard community members talk about how many notes CVs get daily (often this number appears to be near 100) and I feel the need to say that this is very far from the truth. On average I receive maybe 5 notes a day. On a slow day I may not get any at all and on a busy day I may get up to 10. While I can not speak

PE: Defining Community ProjectsDefining Community ProjectsMore Like This
Today we are going to take a look at what exactly a Community Project is and hopefully dispell some misconceptions about them. Our group CRCommunityProjects has a great blurb explaining what Community Projects are that I'd like to quote here:
A community project is a project or contest that is designed by community members to promote a positive, supportive environment here on deviantART. Community projects build community spirit and help all of us to grow as artists and as individuals. They have specific goals and serve to bring people together. These projects are supportive of artists and of artistic growth and provide a stepping-stone to help people achieve their goals.
Community projects can be large or small. They may span multiple galleries and media, or they may be focused on just one. They could even be focused on forums or chats!
I think the blurb above gives a great general overview of what a community project

You see, tonight, I've been switching my blog entries from the last two years over to deviantART. I was doing this because... Well, for anyone that doesn't know, I have terminal cancer and when I pass my blog will probably be taken down. I just wanted the posts to go somewhere. And no, don't panic! I'm not going to ask you to read 3 years worth of blog entries.
I'd just like you to read one. And if you could just consider donating blood or bone marrow(stem cells)... I mean, i don't think there's any hope left for me, but if there is, i'd be grateful if someone would be willing to give me that chance. It's not like most people think, so if you'd just give my post a read, you might find it's not as terrifying

Pixlett / ToxicMutagen (who deactivated their accounts today) scammed more than 3,000 USD from more than 20 artists by filling chargebacks just after a while from paying for adopts or commissions. And apparently, they can do the same with points too.

Stock may also be a collaborative and cooperative venture where imagery is placed for the use of other artists to create derivative work from, or for where its not possible or not practical for the artist to work with them face to face.
Stock may also be your own work, photograph or modeling that you use in your own artwork, either as references or as photo collage and manipulation work. Its a very wide area of photography and in fact extends well beyond it these days with the use of modeling programs and 3D rendering programs that can produce scenes, backgrounds, atmospherics and even digital figures for use in stock work.
I do think it should be very clearly stated and respected for any rules or guidelines controlling the usage of the imag
A brief guide to Pose Reference StockStock & ResourcesMore Like This
In the world of art and design, working with human anatomy can be hard. Everything from the height of a human being to the placement of the back muscles needs to be visualised by the artist or designer, and sometimes it isn't simple. Visualising the human form from memory is often hard, for experts and novice alike, and using live stand-ins to work from isn't usually applicable.
From the lack of referencing tools available, the idea of stock pose models were born and thus an entirely different art form in and of itself.
Pose reference models primarily provide work intended to be used by other artists. As such, the images may look weird and confusing to someone who isn't an artist, but to anyone who has known the horror of not being able to visualise a certain pose, they are often pixelated life savers.
While a few years ago pose references would have been rather hard to source, at the moment they are readily available thanks to easy internet access and

PSA to Writers Seeking Artists For MangasI'm getting a little tired of the sheer ridiculousness of these cries for art. Not just in the volume, but how they're asking for it. Granted the "game developers" who beg for art are just as bad, but that's a whole other breed of stupid. I'm just going to clear up before we get started that I don't think it's wrong to want to write a story and want an artist to collaborate with you, these are very specific and independent skillsets and two brains are better than one as they say.
