Clarifying an Issue with Stock ResourcesThere appears to be a fair amount of misunderstanding on the subject of stock resources so what I would like to do today is attempt to clarify several issues which are of importance to the artists who generously provide stock resources to the public for use and hopefully dispel the confusion and misinformation which is beginning to circulate.
The first issue at hand is in regards to your personal stock terms
Your Personal Stock Terms
Officially deviantART maintains only one "automatic" restriction and that is "No Commercial Use" and that particular restriction can easily be overridden by the actual stock provider.
We only ask a few things from you in return;

Hello everyone, hope you're well.
My sporadic / non-existent DA presence has been due to an addiction that I have suffered through, since early last year. I'd promised myself I'd never get involved in it, but then I moved away from home, and circumstances were different.
I started using Facebook.
Yah, I promised I'd never do it, and then I went and done it.
Aside from a brand new social media addiction, I've been neck deep in book covers, and making some noise in the Horror Literature scene - good times. I'm now focusing FULL TIME on SurrealPSD, which will be my main focus for 2014..
What's that mean?? New content every week, and lots of it. As a little bit of a retrospective, here's a look at what we've done so far. It's a great site, and I'm, very proud of it. I look forward to reintegrating into DA - I hope you're all good, and that everyone isn't still arguing about 'copying' each others work and attacking little kids for copyright

Tags create landing pages around topics — making it easier to discover related artwork, bringing together artists and art appreciators, and forming communities around common interests. Tag Deviations, Collections, and Status Updates
You now have the ability to tag your deviations and Collections. Tags added to your deviations will be publicly viewable — this is a change from the previous use of keywords, which were private. We found major talent to join the DeviantArt team this year to help us assume responsibility for major change and deliver on it. In return, we will be calling on the whole community to exercise its responsibility of continuing to shape DeviantArt into the place where the global undercurrent of creativity feeds the future of popular culture.
DeviantArt is as binary as it is digital in its platform. We serve equally those who produce art as those who need to see art and engage with it. Creating the undercurrent is a function of tools as much as it is a function of community activity. Getting these two to work in unison has always been the secret sauce of DeviantArt – and every recipe for the sauce begins

What inspired you to start writing?
I was a big reader as a child, and my reading was well above grade-level (Shakespeare by seven, Pride and Prejudice by eight), so I often found that I didn't have materials to read that I wanted to read, especially while at school, where the options were much simpler and less interesting. So, I started writing my own stories as ways to keep myself entertained. If I couldn't find what I wanted to read, then I would just have to write it, wouldn't I?

DeviantArt and Angry MobsDue to the nature of DeviantArt it is quite easy to perceive that there's "a lot of people" who are upset with any given thing, enough so that you could even believe that "everyone" believes the same thing.More Like This
I felt that perhaps the community would like me to explain how DeviantArt views these types of things.
First of all, DeviantArt, Inc. is extremely deliberate. We don't do anything accidentally. Everything that hits the community is the result of a team collaboration that usually take weeks or months to complete. And so when we make mistakes they are felt by a group here or by our whole team.
Things you should know:
First of all you must believe that our team is 100% motivated to ensure that DA is healthy, and that decisions we make turn out to be better than how things were before. Each decision is likely to affect different pockets of people, and so you will always see the group that's unhappy pool together. The happy group is happy, so they don't tend to band toget
What is Core Membership?More Like This
Earlier today, DeviantArt released an announcement explaining what "Core Membership Is..." To complement that announcement, I've penned a few of my own thoughts about what Core Membership means to me.
DeviantArt owes its existence to its community. The inspiring, pulsating life force that began 15 years ago with a small group of artists and art appreciators has grown more than anyone could have ever imagined. A true force of motivation and support on the Web, our community is one-of-a-kind in its service to the artistic greater good. And it always has been.
Whether you take the extra moment to answer a Note from a student of art hoping to learn from you, leave a thought-provoking comment on a moving piece of art, or simply watch a deviant, you are invested in your fellow artistic man, and that has all happened naturally from day one. The fact that you're here,

Fan Art Law
Mon Sep 10, 2012 by techgnotic
t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Points are NOT DollarsOh hi, guys! I'm going to talk a little about points this morning. They're cute. They're fun to trade and deviants like getting them! But, I've wanted to write up a journal about this for quite a while now. It's a reminder of what points actually are and for artists to not grossly undercharge for their work. There's lots of tips out there to help artists settle on a price that is fair to them as creators and to their buyers, but I understand it's entirely too easy to undersell yourself. It's difficult to find that balance between making an actual profit and scaring off any potential customers! This is coming from an artist that still struggles with it herself.More Like This
It's a tiny bit easier to come to a decision when thinking in terms of real dollars. Unfortunately, I've noticed that understanding is lost when art is sold for points here on dA. Tips on How To Get CommissionsWhen offering commissions, it can be very hard to get yourself noticed, what with the hundreds of thousands of other artists out there. People gripe about how pageviews aren’t important, but they are a helpful tool for you to see what kind of traffic flow you’re attracting. The more views you get, the more of a chance there is that one of those viewers is interested in commissioning you.More Like This
Gigonomics is a term I heard about a few months ago at an FLBA conference. After Googling it, many people seem to be using it in a slightly different way, but I was particularly intrigued by the way it was used by the keynote speaker, who was also a comedian. I can’t remember his name, but I probably will after I post this…
Basically he said that he takes any gig he can get, because you never know who could be in the audience. That was how he was asked to come to our conference. I realized that this can apply here on DeviantArt as well.

What is photomanipulation?
Photomanipulation is art that uses 2 or more photographic elements combined to make something new. It does not include 3D elements. For reference, see:

Which stock am I allowed to use?
You can only use images or other resources that are your own or that you have explicit permission from the original creator to use. For reference, see:
My Stock and Getty ImagesI have decided that I am going to concentrate more on posting my stock photos to Getty Images. I am seeing a lot of changes here on DeviantArt, I like to nominate a Stock Daily Deviation everyday but the front pages are filled with coprighted photos, stock packs containing many stolen images from Stock Artists here on DA, copyrighted photos from Professional Stock Sites and general Copyrighted photos that are not stock. Respect for Copyright seems to no longer exist here and my photos have been stolen so many times that there is no way I could ever DMCA every occurrence. I am also a little bit tired of very sad people posting my stock to Wallpaper sites so they can take the credit for thousands of views. It is getting harder and harder for a Stock Artist to be noticed here as the front pages are clogged with Celebrity PNGs and Packs and to be honest the Digital Art>Photomanipulation section of DA is a disgrace too, so many manipulations without credits of any kindMore Like This

Why isn't my stock free anymore?
Short answer: The Rule Breakers are doing my head in.
Long answer: I've had my stock in storage for about 5 months because of thieves and people completely ignoring my rules. From the artists I've spoken to, real artists won't mind paying a few points for my resources, and then I can appreciate the amazing artwork instead of stressing about someone misusing or stealing my stock. As Tasastock puts it: The Premium route means I can still keep all my stock out there for artists to use, and gives me some protection against the knobheads out there.
Some things we should talk aboutThis journal is here to highlight, debug and bust some myths for you all of stuff that goes on ALL the time, and is in part spurred by some recent events that leave me somewhat baffled and perplexed over some of the behavior we've been recently seeing across the DA communities, particularly Stock & Resources, and Photomanip since we work so closely together (and its apparently time I wrote a new wall of text to you all.)More Like This

Clarifying Policy Series 3- StockClarifying PolicyMore Like This
As any photo manipulator and many wallpaper artists can tell you, having access to photographs and third party artworks is crucial to their chosen genre of art. These third party photographs and artworks are often called "Stock Photos", "Stock Art", or "Clip Art" and there can be some occasional confusion about what pieces can be used and what pieces cannot be used so I'll attempt to shed a little light on the situation today.
Your best option is to collect your stock from established (and legal) stock photography websites but often it can be difficult to tell an actual stock website from one which is illegally offering copyrighted material under the pretense that it is stock. Knowing the difference will determine whether or not your photo manipulation gets removed by the C&E staff.
What is Royalty Free?
Many legitimate stock websites will offer 'Royalty Free' photographs or art for you
Clarifying 3D Stock, 'Tubes' and 'Renders'With the growing abundance of affordable 3D modeling and rendering programs it was only a matter of time until generous artists began offering finished 3D renders as stock artwork for others to use in their works.More Like This
While the generosity of these 3D stock artists is to be applauded there are others who taint the 3D stock movement by offering chopped up works which rightfully belong to others. Ill attempt to draw a distinctive line between the two types of 3D stock which you will find available.
Be aware that your choice to use or offer the wrong type of 3D stock can result in your submissions being removed and even action being taken against your account.
The acceptable form of 3D stock is one in which you, the submitting artist, has personally posed, textured and rendered the model or scene in question. This involves the purchase of a program capable of handling and rendering figures, models and textures or the use of an open source program capable of the same feats. Regardl
Stock and Resources: Policy ClarificationThe Stock and Resources community is an integral part of deviantART, both for having an active community of its own as well as providing high quality stock to all deviants.More Like This
As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.

Matters Concerning ArchivesAs many of you know, archive file types represent a means to collect together a number of computer files and package them together for the purpose of backup, to transport them to some other location, or simply to compress them so that they take up less space. Many of you here in the deviantART community who offer stock resources, applications, themes and other desktop customization options are all very familiar with them and use them extensively, whether your file type of choice be .zip, .rar, or any one of another dozen options.More Like This

It unfortunately appears that it is once again time to talk about proper stock resources again. I'll be addressing this in this week's CEA Update but I wanted to discuss it a bit informally here first.
I have a hope that some day the issue of stock resources will get straightened out because it really is not as complicated or as confusing as many people are currently forcing it to be, but I guess the nature of the internet pushes people to simply pull the old smash and grab.
I'm going to run down a brief listing of the various problems and pit falls currently affecting the issue of stock resources in general.
The Old Switcheroo
Now we all know there are a good number of legitimate, legal stock resource sites out there with some being free and some being pay sites. A good chunk of you all can name them off the top of your head so I won't bother to list them myself.

Deviant and Art MentionsMentions: Connecting PeopleMore Like This
Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.
How to Mention
There are four ways to mention a deviant.
New Username SymbolsAs part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.More Like This
At a glance, the new symbols are quickly recognizable. When hovering over a username symbol, a tooltip appears, providing a brief explanation of that user's deviant-type. If clicked, a modal appears, giving a brief explanation for each username symbol, with "Learn more" links that lead to more detailed explanations.
A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categorization, colorful avatars, symbols next to usernames. In our constant re-evaluation of what's best for longtime deviants and new users alike, we do sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves if a makeover for some aspect isn't overdue. Changing username symbols was one of the harder things we evaluated.
