Not much to say on this one except that I could have said a lot more about these things (like most of my species) but that there wasn't enough space. Also, these things ARE NOT RELATED TO DINOSAURS AND ONLY BARE RESEMBLANCE BECAUSE OF PARALLEL EVOLUTION.
(I put that in bold caps to make that really clear!
) How they are different:
1. Look close and you'll see that these guys have different hips
from the theropod dinosaurs (like velociraptor and t-rex) that they were admittedly inspired by. There's no protruding hip bone bump (not sure of proper name) between their hind legs which is characteristic of dinosaurs.
2. Different wrists - bird and dinosaur wrists do not bend this way!
3. Rimarian land dragons (what forest snipes are) never evolve into birds.
This thing has a furry covering, but it's not related to a feather. You'd find a closer feather counterpart on a falcolf, falcolfs having actual 'feather-fur.' NO RIMARIAN ANIMAL ACTUALLY HAS FEATHERS THAT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS GAIAN/EARTH ANIMAL FEATHERS.
(Also, NO Rimarian animal has anatomy that is exactly the same as an Earth animal. Rimarian species have different biochemistry!) To make it very clear - Rimer has NO birds!*
4. As I said on point #3, land dragons have different biochemistry which means different physiology. I'm not exactly sure HOW they differ, just that they do and that anything that evolved on Rimer has a different chemical make up (written right into their DNA) than something from Earth, like a chicken. As another example, all elven species on Rimer ALSO have different biochemistry! (Though unlike species originating from Earth, elven species are physiologically/anatomically adapted to Rimer, so they don't randomly die sometimes like Earth animals - including humans - do. Humans will probably have to wait a few thousand years before that stops happening.) And what I basically mean about biochemistry: take this example; the minerals required to build a human bone would be VERY different from the minerals required to build a, saaaay, falcolf bone. The structure of the bone is different chemically, so it requires different things. This is true of an organism's entire body if it's not on its birth planet! (Which makes reproducing with aliens highly unlikely.)
You may wonder... why are they called 'snipes,' right? Well, while snipes are actually a species of bird here on Earth, in my Scout troop (Scouts Canada, NOT BOY SCOUTS - BOY SCOUTS DO NOT EXIST IN CANADA ANY MORE, SCOUTS ARE BOTH GENDERS, 'BOY SCOUT' IS A STUPID TERM AS IT IMPLIES SCOUTS MAY ONLY BE MALE WHICH IS UNTRUE /rant)
we had a camp called Arrowhead where we forced the Cubs (age group of kids younger than Scouts, part of Scouts Canada) to go 'snipe hunting.' As this is a joke in Pixar's Up
I assume that American Scouts also subject their Cubs to this torture. Basically, the Cubs are told to run around a field 'hunting snipe' by shaking a can of rocks and using flash lights so they don't break their necks being silly. I was sort of spoilered to this when I was a Cub, so I refused to do it because I knew the snipes (at least in our geographical case) were completely imaginary. It's a good natured prank and a fond memory, but anyway, that's where Rimarian snipes come from. I don't think you'd want to chase my snipes with a can of rocks!
*Except for those few species imported from Earth that is.
I also kinda think that Rimarian land dragons, are not, for the most part, as smart as dinosaurs. (And I personally like to believe that dinosaurs were
smart! Or, at least the predatory species were. T-rex, for instance had a STELLAR nose but it almost never gets props for that!) SPECIAL THANKS TO FOR HER TECH HELP!
My favourite thing about this is the silhouette - I do believe it's the best one I have drawn all year!
