Photomanip: Challenges and possible solutionsHi everyone,
I am still on hiatus because my 18-hour exam is just a week and a half away. However, I had a few moments, so I wanted to tell you about the results of the photomanipulation community meeting we had the other week.
First, let me say that I am extremely grateful to those of you who came. Everyone had a positive, constructive attitude, and I really think we were able to make good segue into a community that will acknowledge everyone's talents.
Here are some themes that came up and the solutions we decided to create for them.
Problem: People are concerned about what stock is and is not allowed to be used. They are also concerned about being able to copyright their own work and keep people from stealing or copying them.
Solution: I am not sure there is a solution for this one that will be satisfactory to all people, as this is kind-of a risk you take when you post your work online-- especially if you

REMINDER Gallery Makeover Project JournalsGreetings Deviants!More Like This
As I have no doubt most of you have heard from Moonbeam13's journal, a lot of the galleries here on DeviantART are having a makeover. This largely consists of merging and getting rid of categories, but please take a read of the original journal for more details.
I am sure a lot of you have seen these gallery makeover journals floating around already, but here is a definitive list of all the journals so far. Please note that not all galleries are on this list, more may be added later. Also some of these links may be updated in future, and we'll be sure to update the link here as neccessary.
Please comment on the appropriate journals for each area if you have an opinion as to how each gallery can be updated. Remember the more opinions the better so share this journal, and lets get as much of the community involved as we can!

The Realities of a Freelance Digital Artist (SurrealPSD)
In The Moment...Hello all! I'm finally back in acton here on DeviantART again after a rather long/extended leave (or partial leave, depending on which way you look at it). I want to thank everyone who helped and supported me throughout this tough time lately. I am eternally grateful for all of you.More Like This
Without getting into WAY too much detail, I need to express to everyone a huge lesson that I've learned throughout this past few weeks. I recently went through an experience that had me on the edge. A close friend of mine was in a critical health condition that made his family and friends start preparing for the worst case scenario. Each day things were seemingly getting worse and worse. He finally went into a coma. I began reminiscing about our past friendship. Now we didn't exactly have a "perfect friendship", I don't believe anyone truly does have a "perfect" anything. But in the past few years it was....well, bad. And I mean BAD. Fights, arguments, betrayals, and nearly everything that could go w
Documentary PhotographyThere is a procedure I follow taking a documentary image.More Like This
First, get a shot, any shot, without regard to framing, correct exposure or careful focus. This becomes your back-up image. In life things can change incredible quickly and if not for your immediate shot, you might lose it all.
Then carefully improve the first image, with careful selective focus and exposure. I then go on to careful framing to exclude the unnecessary and dramatize my original concept. Along the way, if I'm working with people, I get their eye, so they see my attention to them. This puts them at ease and allows me to continue. There are exceptions to this rule, depending on your personal safety and the risk to your subject as well.
Many the times I have also instructed the subject to disregard me so they don't take away the very reason I stopped for the photo. I tell them, what you're doing is just perfect, don't help me with any changes.
Of course this doesn't always work, but I feel it still is necessary
Tutorial - Understand And Resolve Social IssuesToday I want to share one of my deepest insights into human behavior that I always try to keep in mind.More Like This
If you learn the 2 rules described and explained below, if you absolutely live and breathe them, you will wield immense social power. You will be able to understand and solve a lot of social issues - including a great many of the threads on the "help with life" forum here on dA. It's because all of these issues are just different manifestations of these 2 fundamental rules. I encourage you to actually learn them or even print them out.
The 2 Rules
Rule 1: "If someone is angry, they are actually hurt. If someone is hurt, they are actually feeling a loss."
Comment 1: Generally, loss means that an expectation of someone has not been met. To resolve someone's anger and feeling of hurt, you must understand their loss and address it.
Rule 2: "Whatever any human has ever said to another human is at its base either one of

Manip Academy 13: How to make glowing things Hello everybody!More Like This
Today I'm going to show you how to make glowing things. Light is very important in making photomanipulations, so techniques you will know will be useful.
Make base for your glow
Start from making base at new layer, change blending mode to Color dodge. You can use shape brush (here, dragonflies or stars or anything), or normal soft round brush. Then, duplicate it and change blending mode to Linear dodge (Add). After, for better effect draw with big soft round brush dot over your thing and use Color dodge blending mode. You can duplicate layer with glow or layer with glow and base for better effect.
It's important to make good lightning with glowing things. Light isn't strong, but always light up space around.
Also, you can add some particles around glowing things. Just draw basic shape and change blending options, as is shown. Use the natural color spectrum. Base should be bri

Manip Academy 9: Lighting with Curves AdjustmentsWelcome to Manip Academy!More Like This
Achieving consistent lighting in photomanipulations can be really challenging. A lot of times, we have parts of our model image that need to be lighter while other parts need to be darker. Let's say you need to adjust your model image for a light source that is coming from the right. Rather than using the dodge and burn tools, I use curves adjustment layers. Click on the adjustment layer icon in the layers palette in Photoshop (it looks like a half-filled circle), or click Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves.
Put this above your model layer. In the curves box, dragging the curve up and to the left will make the image lighter, and dragging it down and to the right will make the image darker. Make it lighter, with the intensity as needed to make your model blend with your light source.
I realize that this makes your entire model image lighter rather than just the part of it you want to lighten, but I'm abou

Blending modes and photomanipulations
Few words about most used blending modes (bm), how they affect the image (positive and negative moments).
First of all I want to remind about the option of creating layer filled with neutral colour for chosen blending mode. Holding Alt press icon "create a new layer", Photoshop will show you window like this:
Just select desired bm and check "fill with ... neutral color". Sometimes it's very helpful.
Second, when you use blending modes for toning for example, use option "new adjustment layer - solid colour" instead of filling new layer with bucket. Solid color doesn't increase size of your psd file as much as pixel layer does.
And third - brush, clone stamp, history brush, bucket/gradient, all these tools have option to select bm i
Manip Academy 3: Using shadows on reliefsSorry about the title, the original phrase was too large to fit on the title area. it was supposed to be "Using shadows to highlight reliefs"More Like This
Making shadows correctly is one of the most important things to give te sensation of depth and reliefs in your Works. Soft shadows can be more effective than most consistent and well-defined shadows. Look at the difference in these pictures.
But remember, when the source light is near the element, depending also on the intensity of the light, the shadows get more intense and marked. So, try Always to use that correctly. In this case, the source light is not Strong and also far from the sphere.
Otherwise, to highlight reliefs, you need to take care about the height of that, remember that the area wich will be opposite to the source light needs to be darker, and the farther the shadow is, lighter he gets, and the area closest to the element is darker too. This Picture shows the shadow of a little relief on a plain, look at the direct

In today’s Manip Academy blog I’m going to teach you how to achieve a softening effect with your photomanipulations. This is a trick that I often use, especially for fantasy and emotional style pieces.
NOTE: When I do this technique it is usually my finishing step, so my image is duplicated and my layers are already merged.
Step One: Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. I usually set the Radius at 3.0 pixels; however, you can adjust it to your liking. Click okay.
Step Two: Go to Edit>Fade Gaussian Blur. Set the opacity. Again, you can adjust it to your liking. I often use 25 to 30%. Set the mode to Soft Light. Click OK.
