Thanks to a host of different factors - including, but not limited to, poor marketing decisions, management, and financial investment choices by DreamWorks' CEO and executives - the animation company just keeps fumbling with the Idiot Ball time and time again. Concerning 'Rise of the Guardians', this trend was first seen by me after DreamWorks' layoffs and taking a hit from the movie's release in 2012. From articles on the subject:

Jack Frost crashed through the open window to the floor of Jamie’s room, a huge brown sack almost as big as him falling to the floor as well. Jack flopped down dramatically over Jamie’s back, who was sitting cross-legged on the floor, a pile of envelopes in front of him. Carol, Elisa, Darien, Sydney, Tanya and Kris were there as well, all sitting around the pile.
“Elisa, snowflake, surely you will take pity on me!” Jack cried mournfully, staying glued to Jamie’s back as the boy tried to dislodge the winter spirit.
