Erik was feeling remarkably cheerful. In fact he was fighting the urge to rub his hands together with delight.

He sat at his organ, leaning his head on one hand, the fingers of the other idly picking out a quiet, jaunty tune. Apart from the occasional flickering candle flame his fingers were the only movement in the half-light. The shadows played softly on the porcelain whiteness of his mask. He automatically wrote down the sequence of notes he had just played, he would perhaps work on them later; see if he could mould them into something more professional.
