First, I think that before Ninjago existed, there was a small section of land referred to as "Ninjago" by the people of Ninjago since it existed where Ninjago is now. That was several thousand of years ago, back when dinosaurs like the Grundle existed. Eventually, they died out and the humans took their place.
I assume that the first Spinjitzu master was for a while immortal, and Garmadon and Sensei Wu were too. Back when the first Spinjitzu master created Ninjago, the world was still moderately modern since the four golden weapons can transform into vehicles, his suit was mechanical, and the Overlord showed the understanding of tanks and such even though he was trapped on the Island of Darkness for so long.
