Anatomy Lessons: How to improve faster in 6 steps!
'Life Drawing 5' by algaegoblin
Do you know how to sketch human figures but do you want to refine your anatomy skills? Or do you not know anatomy at all and you are tired to trust your imagination? Did you notice you create disproportions in your drawings?
If you are aspiring artists and you already have your own style, you might as well believe you have no need of a guide, but you are wrong. Before exaggerating human proportions and begin to have your own style, you first have to know the basics.
This little guide is the result of an accurate research and 5 years of high school of art, and it's created for all those who want to learn something new or just make a useful review.
For those who have already studied art, my suggestion is to go to step 6 or trying to repeat all steps in Digital format.
First of all, if you want to learn faster you should draw using traditi

Everyday, millions of users from all over the world use deviantART, and it is really hard for new users to get themselves noticed. Oh yes, it is HARD. It can actually be a really disappointing experience for some of us. But, if you show some patience and work for it, you may just be able to crack through that wall standing between you and exposure to the community. Remember, all it take is patience. Lots and lots of patience. Oh, and you also need to trust yourself. Just because you couldn't get a huge fan base in several weeks or months doesn't mean that you will never get them. But, there are some really important stuff you need to follow first before getting there.
dA is also a community, just like any other community in the world. The only difference is that dA is an online community and the others, well they are totally offline . So, this means there will be some standards to be held in there, or else
PE: Power of PerspectivePE: Power of PerspectiveMore Like This
Perspective is the angle and depth of a piece of art. Changing perspective allows for drastic differences. There is more than one kind of perspective, and all of them allow for more dynamic pieces of art if used correctly.
There are three common choices, and these are explained later.
Usually perspective deals with how close things appear, and correctly rendering perspective adds depth to an image and increases the impact of the composition.
One Point Perspective
One point perspective is where there is one vanishing point in a piece. . A vanishing point is essentially the in-the-distance-until-you-can'

You see this perspective often, images of roads, or landscape often have one point perspective.

I'll be featuring amazing animation, helping newbies get their feet wet and how to upload your animations to deviantART. I will also be talking about web animation sensations on websites such as Youtube and Newgrounds.
Before we start, I'd like to push my Art History articles - I wrote two journals about the History of Animation up until 1990, so if you feel you dont know your Fleischers from your Windsor McCays then step this way!

We want progress, we want improvement, and we want it on our desk in ten minutes ago!
Fine, fine, I hear ya'. While these aren't going to make an instant Leonardo da Vinci out of you, these might get you up to...ehh...Basquiat caliber. Sure, I've made tutorials, but those are more about setting up Photoshop for the sake of coloring an image, and not so much building yourself artistically. Those are more technical lessons. Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything)Art is a process.More Like This
Like that of the scientific method and philosophical alchemy, art can be refined and improved through process. From observation, to experiment, to reflection and conclusion, art is improved by the steps we make towards change, not solidification and stagnation. Much of the advice out there for drawing is simply practice or avoid distractions. This advice is good, but there is more to creation than just throwing yourself mindlessly into a task and avoiding bad habits along the way. Good habits and knowledge will help to excel your learning process faster, and from that, improve faster and more effectively.
Look at it
As an artist, observation is key. The skill we develop is not just seeing, but interpreting what we see, remembering what we have seen and recording it in the form of visual art. This is a skill that, aside from blindness or vision degradation, you will be able to improve during your entire life. The way of seeing from an art

I know there are a million "how to be popular" guides on DA and a million more parody versions of them. This article isn't about becoming popular, or starting drama or racking up pageviews as fast as possible for the sake of seeing a larger number.
This article won't make your art better, or make you more a more popular personality. However, what I've noticed is that many artists are missing out on feedback and exposure that they should be getting if not for a few common mistakes. Time after time, I've read on Artist's Confessions, or just browsing through members' personal journals that their gallery doesn't recieve any traffic and they can't improve because they're not getting any feedback. They feel like their lack of popularity is a personal statement. That their art isn't worth looking at. This is entirely untrue.
Hopefully this will help you, the underexposed artist, to b

Women ArtistsThe other day, I attempted to put together a huge list of some professional and semi-pro women artists over on my tumblr, because it seems like too often women get overlooked when it comes to being honored and recognized. This year, I was incredibly honored to be nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Professional Artist category, but I was a little shocked to find out there hadn’t been another woman nominated in that category since Rowena Morrill in 1986. That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering there are so many women artists out there who are all amazing, who offer unique points of view and design solutions, and who need more visibility and recognition. While putting this list together, I was really excited to find tons of new artists I'd never heard of before.More Like This

What is a 'UserStyle'?
When we go to the User Style category it is not quite clear what a User Style really is. Buried under the massive amount of miscats there are only a few right deviations.
Opposite to what the name might suggests it is not about the style of a certain user. It does not mean that the category can be used to show the world how much you improved, the way you dress, the way you draw or anything else like that.
A UserStyle is pure CSS code and only that. Nothing more, nothing less.
It is called like that because it is a style that changes the appearance of a website for the person using it - the user. So bas

I also have back up plans for days when I'm insanely busy and need to get a quick capture, and other things in the bag for when I know I'm going to need a bit of

Character Design: An introductionMore Like This
Arvalis-2012 by arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a
10 Top Tips To Become A Better ArtistbyMore Like This
Tip 1: Learn the Importance of the Sketch
Sketching is one of those things that every artist MUST do and do often. Sketches don't have to be perfect, nor do you have to show them to anyone. They can be as rough or as scratchy as you like but the thing to keep in mind is it's readability. The purpose of a sketch is to quickly illustrate or develop an idea you have, to capture or study some form of reference so that it can be worked on at a latter date. Because of this, the sketch only needs to convey the right information to you and you alone (unless you are drawing an idea out for a client then the message needs to be crystal clear).

THE NEXT THREE YEARS OF MY LIFE
I had received a job offer at Microsoft. I guess this could have been one of my first 'big time' jobs, so I was a little ecstatic. It felt like a slow build to get to this point, after numerous indie games and under the table freelance jobs, but finally it had come.
I was working with my now best friend and business partner, Stephan, a suave German who I had met only a year or so prior. He had brought me into the fray, working with several other individuals who will, well, simply be known as individuals for privacy sake.
But yes, finally, I could put a professional company I

On the subject of Copyrights and ContentsI'd like to take this moment to address a very important issue within the art community, and this is Copy Rights.More Like This
Recently I had had a situation with a client that reminded me that both parties- the client AND the artist- have specific rights that need to be addressed at the time of creating a design and/or illustration. Both parties need to have a CLEAR understanding of their rights, and ask any and as many questions until they feel as if they have the right information. Assumption and dishonesty are not good business foundations, let alone become legal liability in the long run. Lying on any side is the most common action that leads to bigger situations that at time, will be dealt with legally.
From here on in, the "Client" is the commissioner, and the "Artist" is the person in charge of design, illustration, and/or color.
1) The difference between "content" and "product/property".
When someone commissions you for a design, you have many different types of ownership. The most common

It's something I just made up. Basically, the pass-around story is a story that is written by many different people who each contribute something to the story and then pass the story onto someone else, who contributes to the story and then passes it on, and on, and on.

PatiencePatience does not exist. At least, it is not something that any singular person possesses. Patience is simply the result of a person that is so dedicated to their trade, at which the resulting force pulls them towards a destination. So tightly compulsive in nature, that we allow ourselves to suffer. The result is a trial, not a skill, in which we sit down and focus. A purpose, despite our mad racing thoughts of self doubt and pity, that needs fulfilled. Resistance is the enemy, and it is equal within each and every animal. Except, resistance is an uncaring, relentless presence that never stops, never considers the victim, and never thinks about destinations. Patience is our sacred need to keep a promise.More Like This

What is a giveaway?
Giveaway are things that is given free, often for promotional purposes. -Google definition
In deviantART, giveaways are generally conducted using points ( DA ), or premium subscriptions, physical gifts such as bags or prints etc. They are often intended to promote a group page, events or an individual profile. Giveaways are generally organized by the means of raffle or lucky draws. Almost every giveaways has certain steps to be followed to enter into the raffle followed by a deadline.

A.k.a. "That beautiful detailed flowery art style".
Art Nouveau is an art movement that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. It originated in England and France, where it spread over the last two decades of the 19th century. The origins in each respective country vary though. For example, the German "Jugendstil" was first used 1897 as criticism against cheap mass production of works from artists like Henry van de Velde. Art Nouveau was by far no consistent art movement; there were several geographical differences, although some basic characteristics stayed the same. Those key features are decorative curves and flowery elements.
All in all "Art Nouveau" constisted of divergent art movements in Europe.

I've been a bad kitty-- a very naughty, naughty feline, indeed. You see, today is Alice's Unbirthday, and all the inhabitants of Wonderland had planned to join her and the Mad Hatter for tea and cake. But, the Mad Hatter, being quite a bit off his rocker, is requiring that everyone wear a hat to the party. Anyone without a hat cannot attend.
Whoops! Mysteriously, *smile* all the hats in Wonderland have gone missing. What a shame, what a shame. Whatever shall we do?
I know what we shall do. You and I, stranger, we shall go to the party together. I hear the cake is delicious this year, and there will be plenty for us.
Except, wait! HA! You cannot!!! You have no hat, either! I suppose you'll have to stay here, too, then. Very well. Goodbye.

Price of the Art on dAI would like to move a very specific thread.More Like This
It's about the price of art and commissions. Because there are a lot of questions; what decides for the price of art? Why it is worthy? And why do we buy commissions?
Some is already written here: http://goldenwolf.deviantart.com/journal/26548172/#comments
I've met with many people who were complaining about the price of art, especially why it is expensive and it doesnt deserve. Even some person did a drama just because prices of my art are *too* expensive. And I'm not alone, I've saw on some proffessional artists who are on dA as well.
I noticed the price of art on deviantART is very low.
Like many people complains that full colored picture plus you get original for 50-70$ is too much. I did some research and counted how much artists originally earn (out of dA)- even a simple artist earns 5 times more than great artists on dA which I know.

So if PETA is another concern and problem, then it's just another one we'll have to fix.

It's okay to make mistakes. We learn from them.
You're not a failure, you're not a waste of space. You are loved, even if you don't know it, or believe it. There will always be someone who enjoys your company.
Even if you dislike, or dare I say it, hate yourself; there are 20, 50, 100 people out there who love you.
They love you for who you are.
It's not alright for someone to use you.
It's not alright for someone to treat you badly.
It's not alright for someone to hurt you.
You do not deserve it.
Don't waste your time on people who just turn around and hurt you time and time again.
You can leave the people who do things like that, it's not a bad thing.
It will probably help.
You are not a bandage for someone to come to only when they need you, and then ignore you or avoid you when you need help.
That is not okay.
You are loved.

I'm sure most if not all of us have tried our hand at colored pencils, even if it was only while we were children. Wax based colored pencils are probably the most common and readily available types of colored pencils on the market. As with any type of colored pencil, these come in varying qualities and prices.

I was really excited to meet an animation legend. To those who do not know who Brenda is, here is her IMDB page; http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0152312/?ref_=sr_1
She deserves to be recognized for being the FIRST american female director in a major animation studio (that being Dreamworks and later Disney-Pixar).
I was the first in line (I arrived extra early which was a good move on my part) and I was seated on the second row at the center. The first thing I noticed about Brenda is that she had Merida's wild hair. She also had a very 'motherly' air around her, it just made the room less tense and more comforting.
Brenda signed a few autographs before starting her presentation. A lot of people brought their Brave DVDs for her to sign and she happily did so. I felt dumb for not bringing my copy of 'Prince of Egypt', but to be perfectly honest I was more motivated in getting my picture with her. I don't lik

The Asexual Orientation
Asexuality is a sexual orientation where a person does not experience sexual attraction. One out of every hundred people is likely to be asexual and facts such as this are still pushing boundaries and challenging the thought that the pursuit of happiness doesn't have to include sexual attraction.
I am very passionate about creating bridges of understanding, as I have said many times before. To understand asexuality better, take into consideration that there are different ways of being attracted to a person and that these attractions are not necessarily tied together.

In my world, any ghost or spirit that you might encounter is in existence because in their natural life they had been cursed by, made a deal with, or developed any sort of soul tie with a demon or spiritual being in which they never saw through or fofilled their commitment. Bene goes to the demon or creature of the night and convinces them to sign a contract releasing the spirit to their rightful afterlife, redirecting the curse to his own mind for a period of time. However

To be honest I really couldn't tell you the precise moment my reflection began conversing with me. In fact recalling the day we had our snappy little quarrel proves to be very not very fruitful either, however let me just say the creature's personality, despite being a rather dashing fellow if I do say so myself, was absolutely appalling! Oh! Monday! Yes! It was Monday: Monday morning, I remember it now! I was awakened by the glorious aroma of crystal dewdrops beading across lush greenery, intermixing quite seamlessly with the tangy wafting of morning breath and the faint odder emanating from the inconspicuous streak of drool now pooling at my chin, the mixture reaching my nose in a twirling dance about as graceful as an elephant turtle doing the samba

CryingThis will sound so utterly ridiculous, but I will write it nonetheless.. I was just posting my congratulations on the lovely Synfull's page (they got the July deviousness award!) when I noticed I had congratulations of my own in my inbox. Startled I realised I'd recieved a DD this morning for my poem TattooMore Like This
Now this is my fifth DD, so why the emotional response? you may ask. Well the answer is simple, it is my first poetry DD.
I have had a DD for visual poetry, prose, macro photography and stock photography but never in my home gallery; poetry. Not only that but the DD was given to me by someone who has a meticulous eye for detail. BeccaJS never lets me get away with a half effort, so it feels like such an honour to have impressed her (theoretically!) with poetry . Not only that but I had a DD six months ago so have only been eligible to get another DD for five days!
So yes, I am posting the traditional sappy, sniffley, thank you guys, journal. Beca

It seeps through walls and even locks
When demons with red hair
Bend down in dark despair
Her puppeteer raises high in the air
And tells her no one will ever care.
When bright amber eyes burn
Making all evil in his path turn
The owl-man will stretch his wings
Even though the dark pain stings
His lost love causes twistings
But the sun will come, and brightly it sings.
Her ginger hair will burn like fire
And fall in love with a princely liar
The Queen of justice will raise her head
And clean all wounds that ever bled
She wipes away all tears he shed
And kept peace in her godly homestead
When brothers cry for each other
Three orphans without father or mother
The eldest screams with guilt and regret
And the wisest son becomes a silhouette
The third will pay with blood and sweat

Nsio's Four Tools for a Successful DrawingNsio's Four Tools for a Successful DrawingMore Like This
Let's face it, drawing is hard. Especially for a beginner, learning to draw seem dauntingly challenging. Even more experienced artists have it hard and I'm not anyway different from that. At the same time, weirdly enough, drawing is surprisingly simple and straightforward thing to do. But that's when you know what you are doing.
In fact, drawing is probably hard for you just because you don't know how it's done. And if you ask an artist how it's done, you will likely get rather vague answer. They know how to do it, but they don't know how to explain it for you. Drawing is full of concepts that simply don't translate well for an average Joe. Also, even if a great artists gives you a tip how to draw something, you probably still have troubles at executing it. You just don't see things the way the artist does., so you might even end up using the tip wrong, but believing in it so hard that you can't correct yourself. Not to mention the actu
How to 'Proofread' your ArtCommunity WeekMore Like This
Ever feel like there's something wrong with your art, but you just can't identify what?
Here are some surprisingly simple tricks that you should do throughout painting that will help you easily 'proof read' your art for mistakes and issues:
Check your values
If you're painting a picture in colour, this technique is really helpful. Values are important in a painting to give a 3-D feel and to make the painting not feel flat. 'Value' is how light or dark a colour is. It's often hard to tell the value of a colour as colours can easily trick your eyes into thinking they're lighter or darker than they actually are.
For example, take a look at these two colours:
Which is darker? The blue probably appears to be. However, when we make the image greyscale (take away the colours), you'll see that the values of the colours are almost identical.
Oh noes! How do I prevent myself from being tricked? Check your

Protect Your WorkFor many artists, art theft is a frustrating reality. No matter how we watermark, logo, or constrain the resolution of our work, there are instances where artwork will be reposted, ripped, or used for commercial gain without credit or compensation. For some, this can be almost flattering, to know that there are those that like your work enough to steal it. But, the fact still remains, that your work has been used without permission, and for no gain of your own.More Like This
I have been a photographer for four years now, and throughout that time I am always learning. Part of that education is around copyright, and how to protect my work. The collage above is a brief representation of some of the ways my photography has been stolen. Some were edited without permission, event advertisements, included in a calendar, manipulated to advertise jewelry, sold on canvas, for promoting a cosmetic brand, or even for music videos.

(or makes it better)
We all had those kind of paintings at some point, looking at which we felt something is not right – something is not right – But could not find it. What went wrong? We have put every finest details and all our patience in it. Then?
Art has its own science. Science that makes a successful art – something that comes out exactly you thought of and leaves the same impact on your audience. That science is known as composition in art and music. Where your eyes will go at first, how you will draw attention, how much attention you will draw – these are not luck, but pure science. A well thought designed piece is always successful. So mastering the brushes are not enough, we have to learn about the basics that make a successful art!
Hence, today, we will talk about the 'bad' elements which are solemnly responsible for rui
Tips for Starting Commissions I was thinking about my last journal, where I asked why everyone and their cat wanted to sell commissions so badly. I recieved some really insightful answers.More Like This

I'll add a Disclaimer right here in front, as for whatever reason, something always offends someone :iconstunplz: . So I'll start off by saying, this is just my personal journal, and I'm just one person who has some experience with this. I'm not making a judgment on who should sell what, just writing some things I have personally learned along the way.
Well that's out of the way :iconyodawgplz:
So most artists starting off go through a period of confusion on how to price work. They get a lot of suggestions, or theories from well-meaning people such as:
"Artists always undervalue themselves. Don't charge less than minimum wage per hour"
This is true, and I agree. However, unfortunately,

Whether it’s a flubbed
Being happy with your artI've noticed lately, that there's this emotion that leaves people overwhelmed with the massive amount of good art in the community, thinking that they can never become as good or popular as those others. So sad, because skill or popularity in itself shouldn't be the major goal of an art community. I think many people who start out here get so overwhelmed that they forget what it's actually about.More Like This

They saw those amazing artists that had millions of pageviews, and secretly hoped that by putting their art on the internet, they would be able to do the same. To become madly popular -- a community icon.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble; but it's probably not gonna happen. And if it's gonna happen; it's not going to be soon.

It’s rare that a “new” iconic monster is born and becomes forever identifiable,—— no matter the variations, by generation after generation. So it was when George Romero created the ultimate “zombie” in his Night of the Living Dead in 1968. Zombie Apocalypse fans today may have never heard of George or seen the original “Night,” but the zombies they so love in fare like The Walking Dead owe their existence to Romero’s original vision.
