The day I joined deviantART.
That was ten years ago. A decade.
In that time I've been married, divorced, married again, welcomed my two children into the world, been held in rapture at new friendships and grieved over friends passing, attended devmeets with over 400+ people and made more art than I ever ever thought I would. I've been a member, premium member, a volunteer Gallery Moderator, and now a Core Staff member, running a department within deviantART.
Had anyone told me that my life would unfold in that way ten years ago I simply wouldn't have believed them. The impact that this single website has had on the direction my life has travelled is profound. It has shaped me as a person, as an artist and as a professional. It has enriched my life and those of my family and friends.
So at this time, ten years passing, how can I possibly sum up my experience in a drawing, or a photograph or a cake or anything else? I thought long and hard

“It’s a treat, watching the llamas walk down the hallway,” says Jack Houston, one of the residents. “It’s amazing that there’s another life out there.” For some, it’s the most cuddling they receive in their time at the center; for others, it’s a welcome novelty, relieving the boredom of life in an institution. The llamas leave a profound impression. “I had never met one before,” remembers Holly Barto. “It was heaven. Just emotionally – to be
Zagreb, Day 23: HikingToday I went hiking with $allixsenos, $duke, and ~krvavameri at Medvednica. I ♥ hiking. It's one of my favorite things in the world to do. And it was nice and warm out today so it was perfect weather for it. The only downside was having to wake up at 9AM for it (again, I go to sleep between 3 and 4AM).More Like This
There was a restaurant at the base of the mountain that we met up at. Croatian restaurant culture amuses me because often, there is no menu. You just have to kind of know what there is and order it. I guess it's just assumed that most places have standards like coffee, juice, etc. This isn't really too crazy considering the same mentality applies to US restaurants to some extent. I had no idea what I wanted. $duke kindly stepped in and ordered for me and I ended up with an espresso of some sort.
It was nice out. Still morning. The sun was shining. There was a nice view down of town below.&
Zagreb, Day 17: Lost in a Mathematical ConstructToday, I got lost. Mind you, not in the city. Not in Zagreb. In Importanne Center, which is an underground mall in the city center. I have a natural affinity for getting lost in any sort of building that has negative floors. I would probably daftly lose myself in other mathematical constructs as well if they were provided to me, like maybe in a conic section or something? I don't know.More Like This

Importanne Center is a strange mall. Arena Centar and Avenue Mall are great malls. Importanne Center has mostly very local businesses, mostly stores that (currently) sell prom dresses or very cheaply made clothing. It made me start to think about business here. I'm probably going to piss off Zagrebian people talking about this, but fuck it--it's my impression. I could go into this huge wash of jargon about America's mixed/market economy, capitalism, and Croatia's tertiary sector-driven economy... it all has a heavy influence on what I see,
Zagreb, Day 16: SamoborYesterday, the U.S. embassy in Zagreb issued a warning to U.S. citizens staying here to avoid the city center on Sunday due to some xenophobic war veterans who would be protesting the introduction of Cyrillic script and Serbian language into local schools. I'm like a kid though. You tell me not to do something, I'm going to do it just to be rebellious.More Like This
But I didn't because I ended up going with a couple of friends to the neighboring town of Samobor today, which translates to "only pine" but it also translates to "only boron" which makes the nerd in me happier (even though I was told that it wasn't boron, like the element).
The green flag is the flag of Samobor and the red, white, and blue flag is the Croatian flag. My hoodie is doing some weird unnatural tenting effect that makes me look like I'm like 4 months pregnant or something.

Today I went to Maksimir Park with a friend. I've been wanting to get out to the part of the city, but it's quite a bit of a way out for me, even if I take the tram, so I'd been putting it off. The weather was gorgeous and sunny (to start, anyway!) though, so I decided to walk it.
I started off at Pimpek Plac, which translates to uh... Dick (like, penis) Plaza. I didn't know why it was called that. Then I got there.
Well, there you go. Penis Plaza. Someone has even spraypainted the statue's genitals green in case you still had a shadow of a doubt about why it was called that.
I ate lunch at a restaurant that is informally called "kod srbina," which translates to "A Serb." I can't remember the actual name of the place but the signage had a tennis ball on it. I noticed that there are a few different bars or restaurants in Zagreb that have tennis-themed signage. I'm not sure why.

Today, in a moment of awkwardness, I decided to immediately conclude my experiment with Zagreb's "California Burrito" by doing a follow-up trip to "Mex Cantina." As I remarked in my last entry that sometimes a country has its own unique take on another culture's food... well, Mex Cantina certainly did.
Mex Cantina was a totally different experience from California Burrito. It was a more formal establishment, for one, a sit-down restaurant. If you are American, imagine if there were a Mexican version of Ruby Tuesday or Applebee's. That's about as close as I can get without betraying reality. The people working there were also very... interesting. The mannerisms of the man waiting me had a very strong American vibe to him, straight down to his flirtatious attitude/tone with me when I asked, "Do you speak English?" and he responded, "Welllll, that depends heh heh...."

Last summer, a friend that I met in Paris commented to me that your impressions of a city are not made by the city itself but by the people you meet. He was saying it as a compliment to me even though I didn't live there, because I am a generally positive person and I look for beauty in things more than I do negativity. I am always on the hunt for an adventure and I am fueled by a diet of laughter and fun. Coming here, I like what I see of the city and its unique history and presentation, but so many people tell me I shouldn't! There are people who live here who are so down on the city and the country. And that's fine, but when people pass that attitude on to me... even unintentionally... I don't know what to make of it. I'm already here, so... why sour my experience? The countries I have visited that I love the most are the ones where people

t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Foreword
by $spyed
A number of media outlets are closely monitoring the artistic response by our community to the death of Steve Jobs.
For me, Steve Jobs is an icon. The John Lennon of our time. And while his wife and children, as well as Apple and Pixar, are the landmarks of his life, Steve Jobs encapsulates the core values that have inspired a generation, separate from the images put forth by his companies.
It is his iconography that we as a community should come together and try our hands at capturing. No small feat, but it is precisely what I'd like to see us do. The iconography of Steve Jobs himself. Apple and Pixar and those types of images aside, Steve Jobs transcends these accomplishments through the meaning of his life's work, his vision, and the inspiration that he will continue to be to us all.
Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description, and the int

Earth Day: The Inspiration of the Natural WorldSince human beings harnessed the secret of fire the natural world has been seen by many only in terms of how best it can be exploited of its abundant riches. It’s amazing now to look upon the desert sands of the Arab lands and know that this place, the cradle of earliest civilization, was once known as “The Fertile Crescent.” All Europe was once one great forest – until all those trees were needed to create the naval armadas of dueling empires. Media queries and youFirst, a quick primer, which probably consists of information that most of you already know.More Like This
So, you want to write an article with cool CSS, and you want to make it work nicely when it's displayed on the tiny screen on your smartphone. Tricky! However, with media queries it becomes pretty easy. By writing
.text { color: blue; }
@media only screen and (max-width:480px) {
.text { color: red; }
}
...suddenly you have blue text at normal resolutions, and red text on a smartphone. Or on a browser which has been resized down to be really narrow.
In fact, try it out on this article! If you resize your window right now to make it narrower, it should magically invert its colors. Madness!
As an example of where this might be particularly useful, let's consider the #hq site update articles with that big ol' sidebar.

Yesterday, I went hiking with some friends up to the end of Emma Long in Texas. We found a cave over top a waterfall with a narrow 2 foot tall passage that we spelunked through, crawling on our bellies with only the aid of a small lamp... it opened into a windowed room overlooking the waterfall. Quite a reward for such a strenuous crawl. Afterwards, we hiked up the remaining bit of the mountain, off the trail, to an overlook facing the sunset. As my friends stopped at one point, I turned back and asked, "Why are you stopping here? The mountain goes higher up!" They all turned to one another and said, "I dunno, we always have just stopped here." I ran up the remainder of the mountain... only to find, the best thing ever. A full-sized trampoline. From the top of the mountain, I called back down, "Guys, get

It was nice, in general, to hang out with someone who is also a world traveler and language-lover and get a more in-depth, albeit still somewhat broad (but suitable for me), explanation of the intricacies of Serbo-Croatian and how each language here differs from the other.
I know little differences as I come across them, but not usually the meaning behind those differences. For example, I know in Croatian, you always say "što" ("what") and the same word in Serbian, though it changes if you are using it in interroga
