Aureus was stunned by the number of people filling the medium-sized room. Yucca and Capuli drew his attention first. Yucca still looked rather out of sorts, lying half-curled on the bed, but the hummingbird was as energetic as ever.
“You made it back,” the small bird said in relief, zipping around Aureus’s head. “This late in the tournament, I didn’t know what might happen.”
“I didn’t encounter any trouble,” Aureus replied, “but I did see a fair number of the avian minions circling the Hotel still. This alliance you told me about… I’m glad to see it so strong in numbers.”
Capuli bobbed up and down proudly. “Fenix has done a lot of work getting us all together.”
Aureus cut to the question that nagged at him the most. “Is there a plan? Have you discovered anything?”
“The Thief isn’t as all-powerful as he seems,” the bird replied. “I managed to spy on him without

The dawn atmosphere seemed to possess a healing quality as Aureus walked, feet dampened by the dew on the grass. It would have been pleasant even had the previous circumstances not been appalling, but as they were, he relished the contrast. The palette of the field and wood facing him now was a calming one of blues and greens. There was a cool energy of life in the air, unlike in the stuffy hotel where decay was always around the corner, if it maintained even that great a distance. Insects’ sounds provided an ambient, living hum. All of it was a balm to Aureus’s tattered and sleep-deprived state. As well as a reassuring reminder that some things had gone on much the same as they always had, despite the change of century or whatever else.
He could see why Yucca would rather stay out here.
But where specifically? There were any number of directions a small mammal might have gone in, and they all looked equally promising. He knew admittedly nothing about Yucca’s species

Aureus paused, bemused. Now what? Should he pursue? He strained his senses for sight or sound of her. The forest sounds that had been so soothing earlier were now a distraction, an obscuring mask for Yucca’s movements. Aureus took a few swift but careful steps in the direction he supposed the solenodon to be, parting the dense foliage-laden branches. This yielded only fragmented glimpses of the forest floor.
As he was scrutinizing these attentively, a sharp pain shot through his left foot. He jumped back amid the whir of foliage and whip of branches bending back into place. Yucca clung tightly to his foot, defying the tumult. As her claws broke skin, Aureus felt her teeth sink in too, presumably for good measure. He kicked violently, hoping the force of that and the snag of the underbrush would break her hold. A whack against a small tree did it, and upon righting herself after the impact she shot off under the leaves once again.
The claws that had dug so many pitfall traps were

The Thief cast a brief, disapproving glance on the still-sheathed weapon. “Not the show I bargained for, but it’s over and done. As promised, you’ve won the right to something,” the thylacine said, eyes boring into Aureus. It hadn’t been the Thief that he’d seen earlier. Looking at him now, he felt certain. Damned fool, Aureus thought once more.
He questioned whether to even accept the offer. Yucca laying there injured was not something he wanted to be rewarded for. And what help could he be in obtaining something of someone else’s? He thought about the things his opponents had lost. With Terotail, he had no idea what had driven the ferret to come here and to kill. Quite possibly it was something not his own to begin with.
